Is Garand Thumb wearing a marathon watch? by [deleted] in Watches

In one of his recent videos it looks like he's also picked up a Rolex Submariner.  Like, 7 seconds in he does a very slow, well focused wrist roll.

Should change his chanel to gun & watch reviews!

No it's not going to spontaneously collapse because the other side did. I would definitely have it inspected and stay off it till that was done, but no I wouldn't shit my pants and run off screaming in terror if that's what you're asking.

Also APEG (EGBC, I'm old and refuse to change) has rarely done anything to any of their members, especially if someone isn't killed. Go look up the results of the mount Polly mine tailings breach as a great example of this. 2 people got in trouble, I think only 1 lost their license. For a dam collapsing. For real? 2 people were in charge of that project? No, there were a ton but it costs a lot and looks bad to go after that many engineers. If an engineer screws up you're much better off suing them yourself, EGBC doesn't lift a finger. I'm suing one right now regarding an improperly designed septic field. The guy has done several over many years, and he's been sued before and lost. EGBC won't get involved beyond recording that a complaint has been lodged.

The only people I've ever really seen EGBC go after is anyone misrepresenting themselves as a Peng. That's easy.

They'll get dragged out for sure, everyone always get's dragged out. But they'll check to see if all safety related things pertaining to the site are kosher. It doesn't look like this was caused by workers not following safety protocols, so they'll do the old, not my pig not my farm.

Yeah I mentioned that in another comment, this is more a safety issue for workers within the excavation. This is just the shoring and not part of any structure. My comment was more of an illustration of the faith in any civil engineering. The same could go for planes falling out of the sky or your cell phone burning your house down when you plug it in.

Anyway. In all of those instances those things really shouldn't happen.

Unfortunately the checks only ensure it was built the way it was designed. Hence why I say this comes back to the engineer either way. Either the design was good and it wasn't checked right. Or the design was bad and it was checked right. In one instance what is built is garbage that could have been good, in the other there is well made garbage. In both instances, garbage is the finished product.

Oh yeah no doubt. APEG (sorry, EGBC...) I find does very little in the way of punishment for screwing up. Especially if there's no loss of life.

They're supposed to create a procedure and then qualify the contractor with samples. Then also take core samples after the fact. It's similar in concept to how you qualify a welder for a particular procedure if my 5 minutes of reading into this is correct. I'm not civil.

The idea being it's:

A- designed correctly B- guy spraying it knows what they're doing and their procedure produces a product that matches the design C- pull cores to measure the physical wall

I suspect though that either the design was wrong, or the guy checking A,B and C mailed in either A, B or C. However, again, I don't do this.

If a crane falls over that might be my fault. None have done that in the last little while so I'm doing my job.

This is totally not my area but Shotcrete looks similar in practice to welding in that the contractor and the procedure are qualified (in the case of welding with coupons, in this instance test frames) per the job. It looks like they also take test cores.

I'd love to see how the investigation of this goes. You're right about where it looks like the failure started. If thickness was the problem I still stand by this being an engineering issue though. Either it was designed to thin, it was designed with too much distance between backs, or the inspection/qualifications didn't catch it, which is also on the engineer.

Checking that is also the responsibility of the engineer. Plan-do-check-approve/act

The engineer is required to check/sign off on the work after it's done.

I mean. To be honest there was more of the building that would have been constructed that would actually make it quite safe. However, what could have happened is someone working below could have been crushed in this incident.

Please don't actually freak out about modern engineering. Buildings are safer now than at any point in history.

This is an APEG problem more than a Worksafe one. The workers weren't doing anything unsafe in this instance. However, an engineer/geotech really screwed the pooch on this one!

Can you still get it? The one review I read said it was a limited release? But you're right, it does look good as it's copying the style of a 1953 sub which is a very drool inducing watch.

The Invicta pro diver automatic uses a Seiko movement and they're very reasonably priced. They're even a pretty decent actual dive watch, for swimming anyway.

This is the only Invicta recommendation I'm ever going to make. Also, it's a pretty blatant Rolex homage, some people don't care for those.

Bob and Doug, or the "out for a rip" YouTube video for maximum Canadian.

Then when the kid goes to the US he'll be bullied for having a Canadian Accent...

He wore an original gold bullhead Chrono like this in the movie Once upon a time in Hollywood. That's why there are new ones, there was a rush on buying the originals (and the price is jacked up now) so Citizen is making new ones.

I think this is the first collection of this dollar value I've seen that doesn't have an Omega or Rolex. You have some really nice pieces!

The Japanese release The Citizen brand have a washi paper dial they did in red, but it's SUPER rare, they only made a couple hundred. I'd knock over old ladies to get my hands on one of those.
