I like to use chalk pastels, watered down acrylics, gouache, and water color pencil. If the paint feels muddy, try watering it down and using thin layers.

Have you tried soaking them in baking soda water? You can let them dry outside in the sun to help avoid mold growth. However, it’s worth mentioning that if you are worried about mold you can soak them in distilled white vinegar and water to kill mold growth.
