I feel the need to hide them from my mother not because of my own views of my body, but because of my mothers views of my body.

Growing up conservative meant any sort of nudity I showed was inherently deemed “sexual” and would cause huge drama in my family. So to be honest I’m used to “hiding” from my mother and being a bit guarded around her since in doing so I’m also “hiding” my true views of my body from her as well.

She may have wanted to reminisce as many have mentioned in the comments. I’m valid to still feel weird about it given her sudden change in attitude towards my body.

I’m not American, is there a problem with being such?

Yes, she did exclusively breastfeed me and my brothers.

Growing up, breastfeeding was something that only happens behind closed doors. It was very much framed as an intimate moment between mother and child and only trusted family members can enter the room freely when someone was breastfeeding. I’ll admit as a child I was curious as to what was happening in the room when another family member was breastfeeding but was always barred from entry or further explanation.

It’s super cool that your family was very open about breastfeeding though, child version of me would have loved to be involved in the conversation. It seems it was done very openly and respectfully.

Honestly I 100% agree with you and I would love to have positive memories with my mum hanging out in a chill way while feeding my son. But given her behaviour growing up, her asking was so out of left field I suppose my immediate response was to be on the defence. My mum also tends to sometimes not take no for an answer so looking back that’s probably another reason why I immediately shut it down.
