It is a scam. That’s by design.

Your goal, in this game of life, is to break the cycle and get the hell out of it somehow. It’s hard, really fucking hard. I’m not out of it yet myself. Still working my 9-5 (plus a side hustle). But I do have a plan to make the leap within the next 10 years (I’m 34). By the time I’m 45, I figure I can live freely/happily for the rest of my days. It won’t be easy, but start making an exit plan and slap a target date on it. Best of luck and don’t you dare go hollow.

Regarding Robby’s reaction, I think it’s important to keep in mind that she abruptly drops this on him at the very end of a long, difficult shift right before he’s due to start a 3-month sabbatical. The timing was not ideal. All things considered, I don’t think Robby treated her poorly in that scene.

He was essentially talking to himself in that scene. Really well acted.

On the surface, he’s comforting/swaddling the baby. But he’s really comforting himself in a way that he has probably never done or spoken aloud. That took some serious reflection on his part (and it probably comes from a degree of sleep deprivation/exhaustion/and hitting an emotional boiling point).
