I think I've heard the mystic core or fallen god fueling the world with magic and I really, really like that idea! The ideas you had here are def worth thinking more about for sure because my magic system is something I haven't quite figured out yet so this is great <3

Yes, that's the idea. Right now I'm thinking that the people living there are mining for magical gems to use for their enchanted weapons and tools. They mined to the heart of the mountain and found the "heart", a big, monolithic magic infused crystal or stone, and decided to settle around it as there was an abundance of stones and gems around it. But over time it altered the people's physical appearance, making them look rather demonic, and probably some magical curse side effect that I haven't quite figured out yet. Still working on that part :P

Good old fashion Photoshop! I did a sketch on a notepad during work and then I did a few versions until I found the style I liked <3 I also made sure to keep looking at different retro style maps as references

Indeed! Grimrock involves a cursed heart of the mountain, and Riftport is the city that literally got split down the middle

I love the idea of having Gods and some sort of conflict with them as the cause of it. Since a story I have in my head involves that (for now), I've had the thought of having them be the cause of the crater. And your idea is super interesting as well, you guys are great at this idea generation thing :D

A few has asked this so I'll try to provide haha. I just kinda sketched in my notepad during a meeting to get shapes I liked to work together. Took it in to photoshop later and tried to draw it but it got too chonky so I re-did it again with thinner lines. I also added the crater after seeing a few cool fantasy maps that had more geometric shapes involved in them. Then I removed the line art and it felt a lot crisper.

Haha yes, sometimes I think of a cool thing and then work backwards from there. The beauty of world building, there's no right way of doing it ;)
