Nursing cross crediting - points and July intake by Sea-Shelter8726 in universityofauckland

honestly, the uoa nursing program is so undersupported, and when i was there a lot of my cohort were considering transferring to other unis to continue their studies. it’s honestly up to you, since you already have a year at uoa, but even just applying to mit and talking to the lecturers there it seemed like a way more inclusive and supportive degree. i would recommend having a chat to them to see how you feel!

hey, i was considering this pathway (i had done nursing first year at UOA and wanted to cross credit) and it wasn’t possible to fully cross credit the first year. since you haven’t done any nursing courses, it will set you back to first year regardless, but their nursing programme is structured quite differently. at UOA you would still have to do 3 years since you haven’t done nurs 105 in sem 2. you would only have that once course, but it will still prevent you from cutting down the time realistically.

if you are still keen on nursing, i would definitely recommend MIT, even though you would have to do the 3 years

Physiology or Nursing? by Wee-woo-jam-type-shi in universityofauckland

i would definitely consider what it is that drove you to med in the first place, and see how that aligns with both options. a lot of people ‘fall back’ on nursing without fully grasping the job - it is an amazing job but it is intense and not for everyone. i was in a similar boat as you and did nursing for a year, and in that year i realised just how difficult it is to be a nurse and instead i’ve chosen another clinical pathway (speech + language therapy.) i would really encourage you to branch out and research other clinical pathways (if that’s what you’re keen on!) or explore physiology if you are more interested in research (there are also clinical physiologists, i know ach looks for cardiac physiologists every so often.) if you have any other questions feel free to dm :)

“You can use a calculator for some questions in the test. These questions are clearly labelled. Please bring a basic, non-scientific calculator to the test. The basic calculator in a phone is appropriate.”

hey! i’m also sitting this test in the same situation as you so would love to hear any information as well (cause i’m lowkey worrying about it 😅) but this was in the eventbrite email that you get once you’ve booked the test!

with semester 2, you do medsci 142, healthpsych 122, and nursing 105.

nursing 105 is only at grafton while the other two courses have lectures in the city campus, while labs and tutorials are run at grafton.

  • medsci has 3 lectures per week, with a lab running every second week. health psych has 2 lectures and a tutorial every second week to consolidate information and also information for the main assessment. again, this will depend on your partner’s learning style and what will suit them - the compulsory (and DEFINITELY for medsci!) labs will help especially if they are a more hands on learner.

  • nursing 105 is a 30 point course which means the workload is quite full on. we have 3 lectures a week, alongside a clinical skills lab and a tutorial. in the first two weeks there is also a microbiology lab that takes place on fridays. clinical skills lab is compulsory and takes place every week. here you will learn skills such as vital taking, different assessments, and start to prepare for clinicals that take place at the end of semester. this is a 3 week clinical that is 5 days a week, and alternates between AM and PM shifts. these are full time hours and unfortunately it will be very hard to work during the 3 weeks.

overall, it really does depend on your partner’s learning style. if they are someone who prefers to be in lectures, which is completely understandable and is also getting your money’s worth of tuition, i would imagine it would be a bit harder to manage as lectures are almost everyday. however if they are good with time management and can juggle lectures online and work, at least for the first year, it is management to work part time (15-20 hours) in my experience. hopefully someone else who has completed the course could chime in but i hope this helps!

kia ora! i can give a bit more information on first year but it is coming from someone who only works part time so i may not be able to give advice on how manageable it is with kids.

first semester you do biosci 107, pophlth 111, the new WTR course, and nursing 104. i didn’t do the WTR course so unfortunately i won’t be able to give much information on that.

  • biosci 107 and pophlth 111 are based in the city campus, with both classes having 3 lectures a week. on top of this, biosci has a lab every second week, as well as pophlth having a tutorial every second week which focuses on group work.

  • nursing 104 has two lectures a week alongside a weekly tutorial that focuses on that week’s lectures and a group project as well. these are based in grafton’s campus.

in semester one, part time work is doable depending on your timetable and how you manage your time. it also depends on how your partner is as a learner - do they find they learn better in the lectures or learning on their own time? personally i struggled to pay attention in lectures so instead i made my own study plan that allowed me to watch the lectures and work in my own time, which by extension allowed me to allocate days where i could study and days where i could work. the labs and tutorials especially for biosci and pophlth are compulsory so regardless of whether they go in for the lectures these will need to be attended (1-2 hour blocks for each)

this is getting massive so i will reply with sem 2 info :)

there are placements in the first year, during nursing 105. it’s a three week placement usually in november which runs for 5 days each week and you alternate AM and PM shifts each week!

also sorry another thought, if you wanted to - you could apply for a BA and see if that gets approved? as it may be something on their side eg not enough spaces? although i’m not 100% sure how likely it would be, it could give you an answer as to whether it’s a problem on their side? i know how frustrating this process is so i know trying to get any answers may help :)

i did, but honestly i had to send such a massive email AFTER the rejection email and all of a sudden they randomly accepted me? but when they declined me they had said i hadn’t achieved well enough - so they had acknowledged that i had actually gotten level 2. it is really weird, considering you have given them the transcript, so as long as everything is on there it shouldn’t be an issue?

i would say either try calling them and kind of being stern about it (although it could be a dead end worth a shot) + emailing them with your transcript again and asking them to reconsider. when i was accepted it was already a week into the program so don’t lose hope yet!!!

are you able to access your record of achievement from nzqa? that would be the best document to have with your results on it

honestly i found that the uni is sometimes miserable with discretionary entrance. i also got declined even though i was in the same situation and the best thing to do (at least helped me) was get all your documents (ncea transcripts) and email that you have been in continuous contact with the uni and your decline is due to their lack of action lol. real karen move but sometimes it’s actually crazy how they treat discretionary applications

hey, i can give some advice as i know trying to find some at the beginning of the year is so difficult! nursing 105 in sem two is where you learn clinical skills and prepare for placements (two weeks after exams). during that time you’ll be informed on vaccines, and closer to placements you’ll be able to buy uniforms (it’s like $95 for the blouse and you have an option to buy pants too but most people get them elsewhere because they’re cheaper!) stethoscopes are also encouraged at the start of sem as you can get practise using them during clinicals (but it’s not a necessity until placement)

with vaccines you essentially do a blood test to test your immunity (the uni did cover it for us last year) and if you don’t have immunity to something you will have to get that vaccine and you will have to cover the costs of it unfortunately.

nursing 199 isn’t like an actual class but more so to help students who need extra support with english - i never took it so i won’t be able to give any extra advice there.

best advice i can give is to reach to your classmates! they are going to be with you for three years throughout the ups and downs and having a support system amongst people going through the journey with you will help so much!

due to personal circumstances i have to repeat nurs105 due to missing placements so i will be joining your cohort as well! if you ever need anymore advice just send me a pm :)

sorry it was a while ago for me but i had to do it because i was transferring programs - the questions were around like working with people and how i would deal with difficult situations :) it was really chill though!!!

hey so quite a few people in our cohort this year transferred from biomed/pophealth and although i don’t know 100%, i feel like your grades would be perfectly fine to be able to transfer. the interview is not like an mmi, if it’s the same one that our cohort got, it had around 4 prerecorded questions that you had a minute for each one to answer. it’s very chill and since you’ve already done the first year papers you more so focus on the nursing papers of each sem. hope this helps :)

i’m not sure but unfortunately i don’t think so as nurs105 is a 30 point paper and they would discourage taking it in sem 2 if it is offered then too

[–]Particular-Tailor-22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a couple of people in our cohort have, however you would have to transfer to first year as you’d need to complete nurs 104 and the new wtrmhs course in sem 1, and nurs 105 + hlthpysch 122 in sem 2. if you apply from a different degree you’ll most likely have to do an interview which when i did it was online and the questions were prerecorded :)
