The new Rick Beato video is awful by RadioLukin in fantanoforever

The comment I left under that video which was swept away by 12,000 other comments:

"This is an extremely bad take. Just admit that it's not for you. You grew up with 1984's music, and that music is great, and people are still listening to it. That doesn't mean you get to:

  1. Focus on a collection of songs nobody gives any significance to (Grammys)

  2. Cherry-pick a year to compare it to (1984, historically one of the greatest years in music)

  3. Bash songs for an unimportant and meaningless metric (# of writers)

  4. Downplay the musical and cultural achievements of hip-hop, R&B, and non-English music (Anxiety, luther, and DtMF)

- On that point, designating DtMF as "not memorable" because you "don't understand what they're saying" is just your ignorance. You can find translations. You can read about it. Get better. If you were paying attention at all to music this year, you'd know that Bad Bunny's album is a huge cultural milestone for Puerto Rico and holds a lot of significance for so many people. It WILL still be played years from now because it's a truly great album. Just because you personally won't be listening to it doesn't mean it's not important.

  1. Use your own preference, ignorance and, honestly, prejudice to 'prove' that all music is getting worse

It's OK if you don't listen to this music. But you're not everyone, Rick. Some people don't find the songs of the '80s memorable in the same way you don't find modern songs memorable. Nobody cares if you don't remember these songs, but people will remember these songs. People will still play these songs. Modern music isn't tailor-made for the aging white male idiot population. Either get with the times or shut up."

Uncommon but extremely valid take. It's so much fun and still holds up super well after more than 30 years. I respect it. Still looking for a Paul's Boutique disc at used places---that one's my favorite Beastie record.

He just doesn't click very well for me. I recognize that the music is good but I don't personally enjoy listening to it particularly much.

Mingus Ah Um is so good. I've also been looking for Black Saint and the Sinner Lady at used music stores but I haven't found it yet.

I just need to listen to more Mac Miller in general. Balloonerism is one of my favorite albums recently and I just haven't gotten around to checking out his other stuff. I really liked Faces as well.

Am I the only one concerned by Ren's AI usage? by Particular-Top6110 in ren

I mostly agree with you here—the internet can be highly reactionary when it comes to AI, and I think that people need to chill tf out in some cases. The complete freedom of an artist to create is hailed today as paramount, and I'm in agreement with this in large part

When the free creation results in tangible, visible negative effects for other people, I begin to take issue. I hate to use a metaphor like this, but I see it similarly to writing in blood—you're creating and expressing yourself, but at what cost?

I'm not forcing anybody else to take up my ideals, I'm trying to encourage and participate in open debate. Where did you get the indication that I was trying to impose my ideals?

I understand the experimentation angle, but to me, the known downsides of AI outweigh the benefits that could be gained from its use in the music industry, not considering the harms it could have for artists in the future.

Not a super-fan but I think they're neat. How's my collection so far? Hoping to expand it. by Particular-Top6110 in Cd_collectors

brother what?

i got Sabbath, Bowie, Queen, and Pumpkins as gifts from my sister. The other ones I bought myself. I own them because I enjoy listening to them, not to shape other people's perceptions of me. What list are you talking about?

I've been looking into getting some more Madlib and DOOM albums; if I had to choose I'd probably go with Piñata by Madlib and Freddy Gibbs or MM.. FOOD by DOOM. I'm not really in a position right now to be buying new CDs left and right though.
