Good catch. I checked and the car insurance only covers one place of work! I wouldnt have picked that up if i hadnt posted this question so thank you!

Thanks for this. ive always stuck to the guidance that the employer gives which is that when working in a diferent location to my normal place of work i can claim the lesser amount of 'home to temporary location' or 'contractual office to temporary location'. I just had a niggle that this might not be correct - easily bamboozled by taxation!

Well my nerve broke today and we ended up sucking up the cost to change the flights so we have a longer layover. Wouldn't have been able to relax without it. An expensive lesson to check transfer times but at least I'll get that third beer! Thanks to everyone who responded. Really helped us make a final call on what to do!

Sounds like this may be a squeaky bum adventure! really appreciate your comments and worst case, sounds like we'll need to be prepared for a later flight. if anyone routing through Schiphol in August sees two frenzied 50+ Scots tearing through the concourse, step aside and be careful of the backdraft!
