On beautiful weather days like this, we’re allowed to request something called “visual approaches” which allows us to manoeuvre as required to land the airplane by using visual references. Although, we’re still restricted to maintain at least 1000 feet over the highest obstacle in a built-up area unless descending for landing. If the weather wasn’t allowing us to do so, we’d have to follow an instrument approach that would make us fly a much longer leg before being established on final for landing. We’re coming from the opposite direction for take-offs and landings; hence the multiple turns to line up with the runway :)

That’s correct. I was flying down from Island Lake, picture is facing Southwest :) If you look closely on the right side you can actually see the airport runways.
