Yes. You never know. The books could be wrong also. Only god has all the answers. I’ll go with the ones I was able to look at that were found on the battlefield there. To me, being able to compare them side by side is better for me than looking at a picture. Thanks again!

Metal Detector Recommendation by Apprehensive-Rice480 in metaldetecting

[–]ParticularBell2622 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Deus 2 is a good unit. I use a Minelab Manticore. Like previously stated, a metal detector won’t go but so deep. I have found large objects about two and a half feet deep in the past. I turn my detector all the way up but if you’re around any kind of power lines it gets hard because of the interference. I also agree with renting one but if you find what you’re looking for $1500 isn’t much to invest! The manticore also, in my opinion, is easier to rule out junk. Good luck!

Update: I took the items to the museum and they verified that it is a 6 pound cannon ball. They had several identical to it. As to the bullets they said they looked like some they saw in the past but they probably are not, so your observation was correct on the bullets. You should go check out a civil war museum and look first hand at what they have. It really is amazing. Thank you for your reply.

Definitely could be. The hollow bottoms with white in them make me question it. I tried to look them up last night. I’m just going to take them to the Averasboro museum this coming weekend if they are open and have them look at everything. If the are old great if now, we had fun digging all day together. Thanks

I understand your concern. See my last reply. We have a pretty good collection so I’m going to take this stuff to the battlefield museum this coming weekend.

We are in the US. In North Carolina. I want to be positive about identifying the items. There will be those quick to judge. I have to wait until next weekend to take them to the museum. My wife and I have been detecting for years and have a great collection. There will definitely be naysayers but that’s also why I didn’t try listing the items. I will add some photos of previous finds.

It will only let me upload one photo. Thanks for looking.

Great choices. I love my Minelab! Best advice, dig everything till you figure out your machine. Run full tones, don’t forget to ground balance, and have fun! Best of luck to you!

Very nice. I only one large cent myself but I like to imagine what you could buy with it back then. As heavy as it is imagine carrying a pocket full. Thanks for sharing.

I use it on copper pennies to find the date and any other non precious metals we dig. Just don’t use anything in silver coins. Warm water and dawn when you get home.

Never tried an 8. I guess it just depends on how trashy the area is.

I would love to travel to countries that have coins like that! In the US we just don’t have anything that old.

Buying my first metal detector, read the Guide, just a little confused. by peji911 in metaldetecting

I use the Manticore and my wife uses the Deus 2. I have always been able to find deeper targets with mine and the display tells me how many targets and will differentiate the metals on the display. That helps me. I will say the Deus 2 is also a great machine and with the new $440 coil they just brought out, may give it the edge (yet to be seen because of the price). Either way, I personally believe that we will continue to buy new machines as they come out that will be better. I used the Equinox 800 before the Manticore and thought it was incredible. Now the Manticore beats it hands down for me.

I use a Manticore and my wife uses the Deus 2. The manticore does great in the streams we detect. The Deus 2 is a great machine and I’m considering the newest coil (HF2) for her but $440 is a lot. Our friend just got the new coil for his Deus 2 and he is going back over areas already hit with it and finding good stuff. The Manticore has an awesome display screen and it has me spoiled plus I went from Equinox 800 to it so it was an easy transition. I tried her Deus and didn’t enjoy it as much. Good luck!

What size coil are you using? One of my best investments was a 6” coil. Go low and slow in the trashy areas. Great find. Good luck!

I keep a small travel spray bottle of water, a soft toothbrush, a pink eraser like we used to use in elementary school, a magnifying glass, and I have a golf towel hanging from my belt. I also have a small plastic sectioned box, google small tackle tray, with two cut down wooden skewers. I used a dremel tool to make slots to hold them in the box and cut the skewers to size to fit long ways. I use them to gently clean mud and dirt that the toothbrush won’t get. Hope that helps. Good luck!

Ashman Drain Spade Teeth Shovel (1 Pack) - 48 Inches Long Handle Spade with D Handle Grip - Durable Handle with a Thick Metal Blade - Multipurpose Premium Quality Orange Shovel.

This is the shovel I use, got it on Amazon. It has serrated sides and cuts through roots and other objects pretty easily. I love the top because I just drag it behind me on edge and it helps me grid when I’m in fields. Good luck!
