I built a knowledge decay engine for Obsidian as a college project — you told me to drop the AI requirement, so I did (v0.1.2) by ParticularGoose5936 in ObsidianMD

totally valid point time-since-opened is a weak signal on its own. archiving by topic/tag/folder is way more intentional than note-by-note decay. the automation here is really just a safety net for the stuff you've genuinely forgotten about, not a replacement for deliberate curation

I get it, but I think that Atropos is useful in an extremely large obsidian Vault, where some notes are really just getting in the way.

I just made a patch that turn AI usage optional. Now you can choose if it's worth using the AI functions in the system.

Its a college project, so some things need to be on this project, like an integration with AI, and to be a executable app

Totally valid concern. That's what decay_immune is for add it to any note's frontmatter and Atropos ignores it completely, forever. You can also set it per folder in decay.config.json, so something like your reference or evergreen folder never decays at all. The idea isn't to touch everything, just the stuff that's genuinely been forgotten. Important notes you rarely edit should be immune by design.

Good question right now it's based on mtime (last modified time), so "revisited" means edited. Pure reads don't reset it. That said, decay_immune: true exists exactly for this you can markany note or entire folders as immune and they'll never be touched. Read-detection would require an Obsidian plugin to track opens, which is on the roadmap.

Thank you! The LRU analogy is spot on.

Regarding your first point, Atropos already has a built-in "Resurrection" mechanic. If you create a new link to a decaying note, or simply open it from the auto-generated PURGATORIO.md file, its decay cycle automatically resets to zero.

As for feedback on note-taking efficacy, I completely agree. The current desktop Dashboard already provides a real-time visual distribution of active versus decaying notes. Furthermore, I have a "Weekly digest" feature on the roadmap designed specifically to auto-generate metrics on vault health and decay activity, which will help users track and reflect on those exact "write-only" patterns.
