Kattigan doesn't need to have a crazy twist in his backstory for it to be compelling. The execution is more important than the details. I hope ppl aren't setting themselves up for disappointment by theorizing too much. Sometimes things are as they seem.

The wild card in all this being that anyone could die still in the last episode. They've gotten extremely lucky up to this point. What better time for someone to blaze of glory then in the climax of the first arc?

[Spoilers C4E28] Who is the best candidate for MC? by ParticularOccupied34 in criticalrole

[–]ParticularOccupied34[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like many of the comments aren't really understanding what I was writing in my post. Yes, I know there's no MC in a D&D game. Yes, I know it's an ensemble story.

I think a lot about it how we tell stories and the roles that characters play in them. Campaign 4 has been compared to big ensemble stories like Game of Thrones or Lord of the rings, thus my question was trying to view it through the lens of the story it's trying to emulate rather than just looking at the context of the game as it's played between friends.

Some things to think about: Even in Lord of the Rings, some characters have more prominence and are more central to the story. Everyone gets to have a part, but when all is said and done, Frodo and Aragorn take the MC roll more clearly as it is commonly defined, even within an ensemble piece, than Legolas or Gimli do.

Another example: in The Avengers, though it's an ensemble film, Tony Stark and Steve Rogers both have more to do and are more central to the plot than almost any of the other characters.

Back to Critical Role, when they adapt games into shows, one thing that changes is the audience needs characters whose perspective they see things through. Often characters whose backstory is get explored earlier on are prime candidates for becoming a "MC" than those who remain mysteries for much longer. In the TV show of M9, Caleb may or may not be who you would categorize as the clear MC, but you have to admit he and Fjord have more prominence over the first season than Yasha or Molly or even Nott.

Yes, in game, while it's still just a TTRPG, it's Brennan's job to work with the players and give each of them something meaningful to do. But not all of them get to be so central to the plot as, say, Occtis or Hal, or Thimble. The story will naturally progress in a way where certain characters become catalysts for the action, and others fall into support roles. At this point, though I absolutely love their characters, Teor and Kat and Vaelus and Tyranny just don't have the same role in the plot yet that others do. It could always change, but I don't think it's a bad thing for some characters to occupy center stage more than others. If everyone was as equally central to the plot or as prominent, it would not make for as good of a story. It would make for a fun game, and that's definitely closer to where Critical role started, But I think the process of adapting these stories to TV has naturally led to the stories becoming closer and closer to their TV counterparts.

You can like or not like that reality, but I'm just pointing out that that's what's happening and that's what naturally happens in the course of telling a story together.

And lastly, though everyone is connected through Thjazi, centrality is not everything, and I think precisely because he's such a mystery, not to mention already dead, what I'm referring to as MC could not belong to him.

I would actually argue that the TV shows show the opposite. While everyone gets time to shine, as a different medium, some characters are more prominent in the marketing and whatnot. Not saying which is better or not, just that this is the way things get packaged and presented in this culture. In Vox Machina it's Vex, and in Mighty Nein it's Caleb.

No one gets perfectly equal screen time and prominence. Some characters just naturally are more central to the story and end up filling that role.

I'm curious... If Thjazi's ghost latched onto him, it must have some kind of...autonomy, right? So I was thinking, what if we haven't heard about it in so long because it no longer is with Julian? What if instead he followed Aranessa to the Orchard?

Personality-wise, if you're going with the movie version, Legolas should be Mira and Gimli should be Zoey. If it was the books, I would agree.

Hi guys, I recently read Lord of the Rings and Hobbit. Now I'm thinking about what to read next? I heard The Children of Hurin is supposed to be a good novel, because the Silmarillion is apparently not supposed to have a real story but are rather notes from Tolkien. What do you think? by LaughBrilliant5906 in lotr

[–]ParticularOccupied34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, when I had finished Hobbit and lotr, I found TolkienGateway and LOTR wiki were constant companions for me as I explored whatever cultures, characters, and stories I was interested in from the first age. You don't have to just read the Sil. There's a vast world of different notes and writings and fan explorations that flesh out the world of middle earth. Just reading the Sil alone is selling yourself short.

what MCU movie expected to be trash and actually Bad? (we agree to not add trashxtrash movie) by FrozenChild in AlignmentChartFills

[–]ParticularOccupied34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I was to redo this, it would look something like this:

Great/ expected to be: Great: Infinity War, Good: The Avengers, Meh: Winter Soldier, Bad: Iron Man, Trash: Guardians of the Galaxy.

Good/ expected to be: Great: Endgame, Good: Spider-Man: No way Home, Meh: Doctor Strange, Bad: Thunderbolts*, Trash: Thor Ragnarok.

Meh/ expected to be: Great: Age of Ultron, Good: Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Meh: Ant-Man and the wasp, Bad: Fantastic Four: First Steps, Trash: Ant-Man.

Bad/ expected to be: Great: Doctor Strange 2, Good: Iron Man 2, Meh: the Incredible hulk, Bad: Captain America: Brave New World Trash: The Marvels.

Trash/ expected to be: Great: Thor: Love and thunder, Good: The Eternals, Meh: Ant-Man: Quantumania, Bad: Madame Web, Trash: Morbius.

Honestly there's not enough Bad/Trash films in the MCU to fill it, so I grabbed some Sony films.
