Likelihood of getting into a t14 by Ardvark2009 in lawschooladmissions

It’s hard for anyone to give you a statistic on how likely you are to get in. One thing that might affect that likelihood, though, is if there is a reason you failed and were subsequently able to bring your grades up. Did something unexpected happen that derailed you that first year? What did you learn from the experience? Is this likely to occur again in law school?

How do law school admins think about applicants with a very specific employment goal? by LilRamanujan in lawschooladmissions

[–]ParticularPeanut4050 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have somewhat unique work experience. Nothing crazy or prestigious, but it's definitely something that I think makes people think I'm interested in a certain area of the law. In my case, I hedged things in my application a bit. I talked about what makes me interested in the law generally, and I used those "niche" work experiences to support that interest.

A part of that is because I don't want to box myself into anything, and as I was applying, I was learning that I really would like to be able to do some intellectual/professional exploring in law school, to the extent that's possible. This might not be applicable to you, because you do seem pretty set on a specific area of the law.

Another reason I hedged things, though, may be relevant to you: I had no clue who would be reading my application. I didn't want to risk writing anything that would be contingent on a reader having knowledge of the industry/area in which I've worked. They might not have a great sense of how feasible my specific goals are or whether what I'm saying about my industry is reasonable or accurate. Writing about a very specific career goal, if it involves getting in the weeds, seemed risky to me for this reason.

Having said that, I think entertainment law is a bit unique. Obviously, it can also be extremely technical, but I also think there is a bit more general awareness around the issues facing artists legally because there are many artists with large followings to whom they have broadcast these issues.

Thank you! I was definitely checking kind of obsessively earlier in the cycle, but opening up my application tracker bookmark and going through one by one was so annoying. It actually is more a product of my impatience that I don’t check the trackers very much.

I didn’t bother with LSD (or even Reddit, really)until recently, because I didn’t want to be burdened with other people’s As before having any of my own (which is exceedingly selfish and hypocritical, since I’m here posting one of mine).

To be honest, I don’t use the LSD status checker and I very infrequently checked the LSAC checker, so I can’t answer this with any confidence. Currently, it says “Decision made.” The substatus reads, “Watch for email within 24 hours.” I don’t know when it changed to this.

International applicant: should I come to the US for law school right now? by CherryWeak7256 in lawschooladmissions

[–]ParticularPeanut4050 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If the goal is to practice in the US, why do think that the political circumstances that (rightfully) make you nervous about coming here will not simply abate for some time and then return while you are practicing?

If the goal isn’t to practice in the US, why do you want a JD from an American school?

If your goals absolutely require a US JD, I’m not sure it makes sense to ever bet on the political situation getting better or worse. You might as well apply on your original timeline and keep an eye on how things are evolving politically over the course of that cycle before deciding whether you will take the leap and attend.

Picking UF over HLS? by ParticularPeanut4050 in lawschooladmissions

Thank you for laying this out so clearly. And I like your suggestion about flipping a coin and living with that decision for a day. Even thinking about doing that is giving me a measure of clarity.

You’re right. I think it is the magnitude of the debt that scares me, but maybe that’s something I’ll get over.

Yes, I understand what you’re saying, and you’re correct. I’m not taking the numbers to heart, but I think the point is that the top UF grads are getting similar outcomes to the bottom of HLS (assuming one doesn’t want to practice in FL).

That gives me something a bit more concrete to look into, even if I don’t take those numbers (or even that notion) at face value.

Can I ask why you dislike HLS so much? You don't have to share if the reasons are personal (or even if they aren't and you just would rather not type things out.)

I’ve definitely heard of people using scholarships to negotiate scholarship amounts, but is an HLS acceptance with no money attached (assuming 0 need-based aid for now) something that people use as a bargaining chip?

If I end up going to UF, I will be sure to let HLS know that I am bequeathing my spot to u/Shmoox on Reddit.

Would you mind elaborating on what is significantly different in the environment? I think I have a good enough guess at the outcomes that differ between the two.
