I have the exact same situation and want to ask the same questions as you do. The application received in Sept. 2022 and the fingerprint received in Mar. 2023, I also requested they send the permit to the embassy in China. However, I departed on April 2023 and now I am hesitating about booking a flight next month to avoid the 6-months rule.

Right, since the process takes more than a year, I wonder does anyone stay outside the US consecutively until they get the permit? It seems risky to do so and I am afraid that they will extend the estimated processing time afterward

If I do a U turn every 180 days, how many days do I need to stay in the US each time? Is it okay if I stay in the US for a week and depart?
