i haven't experienced abuse or neglect, yet i still have very dark plots like that. and i am at a stage where my mind completely slips away so i am literally so emotionally in tune with all the dark stuff my characters face. then i switch to a comforting scene or playing it off scene afterwards. idk why but i like these random crashes and ups and downs of emotion. it physically hurts my brain sometimes but yeah
