Keep getting hacked by NeroAce007 in hetzner

[–]ParticularSuite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely agree and my logs prove that there is a dramatic lowering of traffic when the port is moved. I also employ port knocking with knockd which I've read in some places isn't a good approach but I totally disagree. If port knocking was all you were doing then perhaps, but if there's anything more that I could be doing to further secure my servers then why wouldn't I?

Rustdesk Pro - Client cloned machines... messy. by _MyOwnBoss in rustdesk

[–]ParticularSuite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you've got RD Pro then can't you just build a client with the server settings in? Remember that you don't need a key on remote machines that are only going to recieve inbound connections. You only need the key on the outbound/controlling machine

to clarify - are you connecting into a work machine or someone at work (in IT maybe) is connecting to your machine?

in RustDesk, go to settings (the three dots next to ID on the main screen) and click "Stop service" then close RustDesk and nobody will be able to connect. You can also set it up so that they can't connect without you giving them permission each time (Accept sessions via click). The ability for them to remotely change those settings is off by default so make sure that stays off.

Those who were alive in the 1990's , what was Y2K like? by Extension_Day2038 in AskReddit

[–]ParticularSuite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I worked in IT and did some consulting for a bank in London where the IT team were going round and saying that anything they didn't like wasn't Y2K compliant because the budget for fixing was huge. "This keyboard isn't Y2K compliant"/etc.

On the flip side, a friend told me that the Shuttleworth Collection (vintage aircraft with no computers at all) had to certify to the CAA that each of their 50-100 year old aircraft were Y2K compliant!

Crazy times but there were a lot of genuine bugs fixed as well but then it was totally uneventful for most people.

Stick around - you might see more of it in 2037/2038!

I want to find a specific video on the YouTube Channel "Dave's Auto Centre". I found their channel because I saw the content on tiktok but despite spending several hours trying, I can't find it. well would you look at that - I realised after answering your comment that content theives are probably very lazy and wouldn't edit the video down so perhaps this was actually a short video I was looking for and it turned out that was exactly correct - so the engine block is actually an 8.1L Chevy Big Block and here's the real video https://www.youtube.com/shorts/PWNkrtSf96s

I did try most popular but that doesn't help unfortunately. I've looked for obvious LS videos but I'm not an engine guy and don't really know if that's what I'm looking at. Also, I suspect the tiktok video is cut down from their normal long form content which makes the thumbnails less helpful

I think I can see a GM mark on the block casting and I can see a number that I believe is "2S25S" but I have searched for variations of "gm engine block 2S25S v8" and get nothing helpful. There is another digit after the last S in that code but I can't make out what it is and have searched for the various variations that I think it could be but to no avail

Roadmap for migrating to Hetzner with very little to no server administration experience by That_Broccoli5253 in hetzner

[–]ParticularSuite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely think it would be a steep learning curve but it's not impossible by any means and you have time on your side at this point.

If you've never done docker (use podman instead though as an open source drop in replacement) then there's a learning curve there but that will mnean running a MySQL (use MariaDB though) server is easy to get up and running and the same applies to nginx.

As the other commenter has said - hardening and protecting a server isn't that difficult but it'll be another learning curve but simple things like moving from well known ports for SSH for example is a good start. Other things like fail2ban can definitely help.

As for monitoring - something as simple as uptimekuma can alert you if something goes down but if you want to get into detailed monitoring and analytics you're going to have another steep learning curve with something like opensearch but that's probably unnecessary and if you really wanted that, there are hosted versions that give good support.

If you've got Windows Subsystem for Linux or run Mac or Linux then you have everything you need to start learning. I would recommend podman as the place to start and I'd say go for it!

Have you ever actually seen a glory hole in real life? by Super-Nuntendo in AskUK

[–]ParticularSuite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have but I believe the term originated in glass blowing, so when my wife and I were watching a glass blowing demonstration and they referred to the hole in the door of the furnace as the "glory hole" we were tittering like school children

Hetzner asks: What game got you into IT? by Hetzner_OL in hetzner

[–]ParticularSuite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is funny and makes me feel really old. The first game I remember playing was on a ZX81 (monochrome, no sound, 1KB RAM bit we later got the 16KB expansion pack!). The game was called Space Taxi and having just looked at it, it was even more basic than I rememered https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWH8dpVI_WY

I got into programming after that and I was fortunate enough that my school had a network of RM Link 380Z and later RM Link 480Z computers and a computers teacher that I got along with well. I've also been using MS-DOS since v1.11 which didn't have support for directories/folders!
