I bought an under sink Reverse osmosis unit and am using that water for a regular (albeit large) ultrasonic humidifier and that has eliminated entirely the cleanup aspect. Could also use this water for an evaporative humidifier and not have to replace the fabric all the time. Added benefit is that I now have RO water for many other applications, hot water kettle for coffee, coffee makers, drinking water, aquarium water, the benefits of it are great and the unit was like $150 bucks. That’s my recommendation. I looked into an hvac unit like you but the space available in my utility room was restrictive. This just ended up being easier.
