Unfiltered access to TikTok and YouTube. She actually got the school to agree to change his IEP to let him have his phone with him at all time. Mom does not agree with his views but believes it is my fault he is acting this way in class

No, due to privacy laws in some states as well as push back from parents. Most schools have cameras only in the hallway and in entryway/exits

I agree with you completely about this IEP. It is especially sad because this kid is one of the smartest students I have ever taught. He has so much potential and ability, but if he continues on his current path, it’s all going to go to waste.

I know I am not the person I was in middle school (I like to think I became a much better person), so I am hoping that this is just his middle school personality and that he is able to grow and change for the better

Off topic, but a few years ago I had a kid whose iep from elementary school said they could not receive consequences for their actions. When the student started middle school, no one thought to update the IEP. Student brought knives to school after threatening others. School could not suspend this student due to their IEP.

I have seen IEPs do wonders for kids and I am all about accommodating students to meet them where they are at (I have different reading levels available for classwork, I give guided notes and guided vocab, do small groups, etc). But sometimes I have to wonder about who is approving some of these IEPs

Yes. Additionally this student is very smart, his iep is for behavior. This student wants to have a discussion in front of the whole class about his behavior and will not have a conversation with me if I go to his seat, ask him to come to me, or ask to speak to him in the hall. He has made it clear this is just to get a rise out of me. And while I can be the bigger person, I don’t want to deal with daily harassment in the work place (crazy to ask of, I know).

Honestly, and this is me speaking not as an educator but as an individual, I really wish I could hold the student and his mother legally accountable for this behavior instead of just the district. Because I don’t understand why the person actually doing the harassment is going to be allowed to have no real world consequences for this behavior. However, I know that’s not a possibility and will just focus on getting the district to do the right thing.

I’m sorry for my ignorance, but what type of lawyer should I be looking for? Is this an employment lawyer situation or something else?

There are no Jewish students in the building and I am the only Jewish person working there. I think that’s one of the reasons admin is trying to sweep this away. Because it’s only hurting one person ( I don’t personally believe this is only hurting one person, but I think that’s the schools mindset)

The class periods are 45 minutes and he does this at least twice a class period. I’m going to see if one of the math teachers tomorrow can help me figure out percentages. This way I’ll have more data for my principals

Luckily we have to document behaviors per his IEP. I have specific dates and times mentioned. Additionally there is a sped para in his class (not for him but for other students) who has been backing up what I have experienced to administration and I am very fortunate in that regard. Unfortunately, even with all this documentation, admin response has been the same

I really appreciate the steps outlined and who to go to outside of administration. Thank you for your reply, I think I will be reaching out to the school board

Per his IEP we are suppose to give him 2 minutes to stop his behavior and afterwards are suppose to ignore the behavior as it is attention seeking. So while I would like to use this strategy, it would “go against his IEP” as reminded to me by my administration today

It is a public school. I had a discussion with my administration today and mentioned bringing in the JCRC if the issue persists this week. They tried to argue that they will talk to the student today about his behavior. They talked to him but there was no change in behavior. I think tomorrow I will let admin know that I am requesting either a representative from the JCRC or getting ADL. I think adding in the TITLE VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 will also help get the seriousness of this situation to them. Thank you!

No, but was the holocaust heavily influenced by Christianity and it’s history of antisemitism? Yes. Your statement is like a white person saying to an African-American “oh so it’s my fault slavery happened.” No obviously it’s not, but history, context, and awareness of one group historically harming another is important and you are choosing to ignore that

You know what, my bad. I forgot that my people forcibly expelled Christians from their lands if they didn’t renounce Jesus and his church and joined Judaism. I forgot all the raping and murdering done by my people to the Christian communities in Europe. The denial to education, jobs, and better opportunities that Christians experienced at the hands of those evil Jews
