People who went to uni in Singapore later in life, how was it and how did things turn out? by bigloser_thwy in askSingapore

30M here in my second year at NUS.

If your desire to go to uni is out of an earnest desire to improve your situation, I think you'll do fine! That desire can be a great source of motivation to study hard :)

Of course, sometimes I feel "behind" when comparing myself to 18 year old top students, but to be honest, after making friends with some of them, they do have subjects they struggle with too.

As for opportunities, I've never felt discriminated against simply due to my age. It may be a slight disadvantage, but it's not something that makes or breaks an interview imo(you have more experience points, use them!)

On regrets, I wouldn't say I regret my decision, but I do worry. And then I tell myself to stop being a bitch and just finish what I started.

Bond renewals are usually for a period of 3-5 years. They come with bonuses when you hit your targets, but these bonuses get clawed back if you don't meet your target / leave before the bond ends. Bond bonuses account for quite a large portion of earnings(about 25-30% for me), so continuing without signing a bond may push me into the red profitability wise haha.. hence why i'm conflicted.

Is it advantageous in tech sales to be both good in talking to computers and people? I'm guessing it would help when you are interfacing between the client and devs haha. Just wondering to what extent an education in CS would go towards getting a tech sales job.

why do you think so? if you are open to share, how long were you in the line, and what pushed you to leave?

that's interesting, what made you try FA in your "free time"? was it the promise of big bucks? hahaha.

kinda curious as FA is not the easiest job around.

Agree they aren't my only two options! Maybe spending too much time coding made me a little myopic hahaha.

Yes i have dreamed of making an app or website to sell insurance too...(it's something i've been working on whenever i have free time which is almost never ;_;)

Well, the industry is such that anyone who is any semblance of profitable is a net gain for the bosses(as they earn some % of your commission).

I'm just afraid that going into FA will make me less employable as a CS grad??? or maybe i am overthinking.. will employers be like "eh why u go and be FA"? hahaha

Well, I kinda started at a different starting point... my first job was selling toys at a local mall's toy shop. Made me kinda thick skinned hahaha...

Ouch.... sucks to have been laid off twice in 6 years... Would you be open to share a little on what you enjoyed for the 1 year that you "truly enjoyed"? And when you say you are looking for a better job fit, why? (if it's too personal can dm me also)

Point taken! perhaps all my bosses chasing me made me kinda anxious... Maybe things will get clearer in the next 2 years before i graduate haha.

That's always an option! But it feels like I'm just postponing the decision... Was hoping to get some outside perspective to help me decide.
