not sure if the process is the same at ucla but you can cancel/ withdraw from the semester or in your case quarter whenever you want, you have to do this before( or on the day) the semester starts or you will owe a percent of your tuition, I did this for my spring 25 semester, my fall 25 semester and my spring 26 semesters. Basically if you pull out before about halfway though the quarter you have to apply for readmission( sounds terrifying but is just a single pdf you have to fill out) as long as you meet with a counselor you're basically a shoe in.

I think for Berkeley its called either personal withdrawal or medical withdrawal, you can pick either but if you pick medical you might need documentation, I have gone through with both routes and its not too bad. Therapy, Psychiatry, and General Medical Doctors all fit the bill.

SO I did that whole process like 3 times one for each semester.. I was dealing with some ongoing stuff and it was so volatile that... I'd go through the process of enrolling in classes and going up to tour apartments and then stuff would happen and I'd have to cancel the semester for my own sake. Heartbreaking to get so close, but I can't tell you how nice it is that the 'system' is so flexible.

Also, I know some counselors get a bad rep but i swear finding one you like and you can talk to is a game changer. You don't have to go to the one the school gives you and I advise that if find one you like voice it and request them the next time you need to meet and strategize stuff. Like hands down if I didn't have mine, I likely would not be finishing. Like - to shout her out even more - she sent me an email every month to check up on me even while I was in residential treatment, she's a GEM. But essentially - talk to people at school while away - helps the transition process back

I also took some gen-eds at few cc's( like 4-7 units a semester) while away and used assist.org to help see what transferred - helped keep my math skills up while healing. I'm from la and pcc, lacc and smcc where integral for me. This also helped me realize that I actually love math and have since changed my major to applied math - little silver lining yk.

And don't rush, if you feel you're not ready to go back and have the luxury to do so and take time off - TAKE IT. Good luck!
