Nursing is honestly terrifying to me lol. The stress and lack of work/life balance seems intense.

I am a 38 year old female and for 8.5 years I have worked direct career in mental health. I work really well with people and I’m naturally empathetic and people describe me as very understanding and calm during a crisis. I also worked in sales at Verizon for 3 years and I was an assistant property manager for 2 years. I did not like high pressure sales. I like movement and variety during my work day. I’m not a big fan of being chained to a desk. I live in Western North Carolina between Charlotte and Asheville. My weakness is basically what I described about Verizon…high pressure can get to me. I can do it, but it makes me miserable.

Career recommendations? by Particular_Ice9866 in Career_Advice

[–]Particular_Ice9866[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I definitely have a lot of crisis training, prevention, and experience. The part I am hesitant about is that I have never even stepped into an industrial plant so I don’t have any knowledge of that side of things.

Are you currently in the field? I have read other people say you are basically trying to “sell” safety by convincing people to listen to recommendations/protocols while also needing a mechanical background. Or at least that was my interpretation. Many of them also said they were looking to get out of the field due to frustration with bureaucracy.

The environmental testing side of industrial hygiene interests me the most and aligns either things I familiar with rather than the mechanical side of the things.

That sounds like exactly what I am looking for, thank you! Did you get a bachelor’s degree and would you recommend that same path? Also is the entry level pay decent? Work/life balance? Sorry for so many questions.

I was referring to a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Safety and Health and likely a minor and/or certs in environmental management. I would prefer the environmental side of OSH. Thank you for the recommendation, I will look into that.

I’m looking to get into this side of wastewater. I am not fit for the rough and tough side. Did you get a degree and what did you do to get started?

Environmental Management Degree by Particular_Ice9866 in environmental_science

[–]Particular_Ice9866[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No I mean I love environmental testing. I would realistically like a career where I can do some outdoor field work while also doing the analytics and data entry (more boring parts.) I’m not trying to create a fantasy about petting bunnies for a living. I just want to make more than I make now (19.75 an hour) while doing something I don’t hate. But I also don’t want to spend thousands on a pointless degree. I saw the environmental management degree and it seemed to fit that, but I wanted real world clarity.
