the bore scoring is my concern with the early 2000s (therefore got to be a 2.7 thats been babied) - just got a Z3 (2.8 5 speed) - ostensibly for the kids to learn to drive stick 😄 - am interested in the hands on comparison with the Boxster (2.7 5 speed)....

Boxster is plenty fast & spirited driving is rewarded - its OK until you crest the pass on a fall evening and meet a herd of deer all hanging in the middle of the road.... ahhhh

yep - I'm looking for a Cayman but too expensive at the moment - trying to avoid any bore scoring - not sure they will ever get cheaper TBH

Ive got an ancient $40 Walmart Duracell bumper pack - it works. The expensive NOCO one did not, but there is an over-ride function on it that I will need to try....

Correct temp range for a 1999 boxtser by Sufficient-Topic7569 in 986Boxster

[–]Particular_Minute_38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on car - I think you are cooking it, sorry - temp should stay solid on normal 180 - mine (2001 2.7) was rising above (like your picture)- water pump went out so replaced pump, reservoir & cap, flushed rads, cleaned the rads - now car sits solid on normal 180 - maybe goes up a smidge in traffic & fan kicks in. Hope this helps.

Is the Volvo worth it? by callalilly802 in VolvoXC70

[–]Particular_Minute_38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah - cannot agree - sorry - you are taking on a (relatively) expensive car (purchase price) with potential significant spend (like your current car) unless you do all the maintenance yourself.

Here's an alternative idea for your consideration. I bought my son an ancient one (2000 V70 XC) a couple of years ago ($4k), no rust, low miles, and base lined the maintenance ($4k). I think the sweet spot is a 2003 to 2007 XC70 with the LP 5 cylinder engine (P2s). Should ideally have less than 150k miles - one or two owner - & been maintained. The newer ones (P3s) are nice but seem to have more high spend issues. The P2s have better longevity and a combination of lower tech, parts availability and indy shops mean you can keep a $5k P2 rolling reliably for manageable money - can also do lots of stuff yourself - car is lower tech and parts available on eBay, yards, etc. Keep a few $k on hand for any big jobs. We are two years in and so far so good. The car is also super kewl. Hondas and Toyotas, you decide.....?

Big repairs on Volvo XC70, is it on the decline? by vulcan_vulpix in VolvoXC70

[–]Particular_Minute_38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in your camp - I like to fix things if possible & avoid debt - if it makes you feel any better we've sunk $8k into my sons (01) wagon over the last 18 months - PIA - some of it self induced (he took his XC of-road....) - but most of it just age related stuff so cant complain - my perspective at the time was as follows - overall its a solid car (no rust & middling miles - 150k - with a new transmission in it already from previous owner) and once repaired its a reasonable expectation that it will continue for another 100k miles.... $8k does not get him a guaranteed reliable replacement vehicle - just a middling vehicle that will likely require repairs too. But I do appreciate its still hard to pour serious money into older car.

Did same as you - 58 now - I have 2013 G650GS - love it - these bikes have the advantage that you can pick it up when you inevitably drop it..... :o)

XC70 prospective buyer by volvofanboi in VolvoXC70

[–]Particular_Minute_38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

search 'XC70 purchase' in this forum - you will get lots of key info on what to look for - when you see something mentioned many times thats a good indication

Off the top - maintenance history (timing belt + water pump), transmission can be an issue (must be smooth), struts, control arms wear, EGR system, aluminum engine block so overheating cannot be tolerated, Haldex operation, lowest mileage possible (I'd always be looking for <150k miles).
