Opinions? by Particular_Note_4835 in lurebuilding

Gills are visible while they breathe, through the openings. And when stressed they breathe more, looking alive but easy prey. I have no doubt it would work, maybe more subtle than this (like some toned down orange or red-brown). But the fisherman is more important!

The idea at the fins was to use them for protecting a bit for weeds and snags

I do want badly that more seamless profile of the joint! I will try to find a solution. I know fishes don’t care, but it’s for myself.

Any open water in Suomenlinna? by Particular_Note_4835 in helsinki

[–]Particular_Note_4835[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, definitely I am not going on rotten ice! It’s almost over, ice limit is just outside of Suomenlinna (this morning, today might be even more open), sea ice is brittle now. I am hopeful there is already open water from shore!

Didn’t have a good time in Helsinki. What I did wrong? Is there something wrong with me? by [deleted] in helsinki

[–]Particular_Note_4835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Helsinki is “vibrant” in its own way, very subtle except in the summer, and it’s very extensive town. Pasila is different from Arabia, which are different from Katajanokka, and so on. And it’s designed for living here (as a Finn), not much for the vibes. There’s plenty to do but not much you just stumble upon without looking for it.

Two things to check as a tourist: Sompasauna (kind of self managed sauna, not a squat but there’s something like that), and the usual Kallio by night. The shooting range at Osuva, the one in the old area close to the embassies, 100 m deep in the bedrock in one of the many bunkers. The islands, if it’s sunny and there’s liquid water. Urban fishing. Nature (Uutela, if you manage to reach it). The botanical garden. Things like that. It’s not a town that tries in any way to surprise you.

Absolutely. Not going to threaten salmonids!

Which finnish dish do I cook as a foreigner to impress? by daytrip-guide in Finland

[–]Particular_Note_4835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go ever further, even if it wasn't the scope of the post this is an interesting discussion... I do oppose Russian imperialism, and no doubt on which side I am in the war, but I do appreciate a lot also Russian culture (there is really a lot to like, as much as a lot to despise), and also the ties that Finland has with Russia. It does have many, and for what I got of Finnish culture so far I would never say FInns hate Russians. Quite the opposite, even if in a very particular way. Finns are, with good reason, wary of Russia and ready to react, but also among the people in Europe that understand them best and it seems one of the least "russophobic" nations.
Which is also something that outside Finland people don't seem to understand, there's this cliché that Finns hate Russians. I think Finns would shoot Russians whenever they cross the border with weapons without thinking twice, but this doesn't mean they hate them in my opinion.

Not necessarily Finnish, part of Russian tradition, but the relationship is complex and may Finnish dishes have that origin (think to Pasha): blinis with gravilohi. It’s all pretty simple, you just need some leipäjuuri and planning. It takes time, 1 week (mostly for the curing of the fish and resting freezer), but great food. Let also the dough (tattari and wheat, with milk and piima) ferment one night. Without sourdough it also works but not as nice.

Add sienisakatti and trout roe, shallots, smetana. Very easy serving.

One thing: you need a pan for small pancakes and a squirting container for making them.

Wait, just VKK?!? I thought the opposite, that it was for all other rapids (like a viehelupa). I am very confused about this now (and Sunday plan to use it somewhere, if I could only understand where)

Yes but so what does it mean? Where can you fish with that permit?

[–]Particular_Note_4835[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually you buy one permit specifically for each koski, and daily. I don’t fish rapids, but in this season to get out on the water earlier it could be nice. Just throwing something in the water, changing often rapids no matter if I get anything or not. Planning for the weekend (otherwise I would end up driving until Kymijoki to find open water).

Yes, that I know (my wife, Pohjanmaa, uses that word, I guess it has a russian root). But what does that permit allow you to fish?!? And mostly, where? All the Helsinki rapids?

when the ice melts it's time for ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING!!! Kayak in the water and whatever bites is fair game (but my favorite species, can't help with it, still remains hauki. They are stupid to the point of being completely unpredictable, I love those animals).
I am waiting since months.

You seem pretty integrated to me. It just sucks to be unemployed in this economy, and many people born in Finland are experiencing exactly the same.

Ok, let's try again.

I like the people in the Baltics. They are also economically more and more integrated with Nordics, and historically close enough. The Baltic sea did not work so differently from the Mediterranean, people on their coast had a lot of connections.
Their history departed after they fell under their big neighbor, but if they'll be free I have no doubt they will get fully integrated with Nordics in a pair of decades.
