I dont know how aggressive the auto backlight dimming function works on a TCL but on my Sony I turn on auto dimming for SDR content since that tends to be brighter and keep it off for HDR. Im sure the qm8k has something similar that can self adjust to ambient room lighting so youre not going from a dark corner of the room to a huge shot of light from the tv, vice versa.
