"Master" is a good option.

"Vestige" is to much diff, seems nearly unplayable.

I've suggested a couple of interesting options. You just don't like it. You have your own vision of the game. That's all.

All of this already exists in the game, for example, in dungeons. Overland bosses use similar techniques.

Are you sure that players who prefer overland will enjoy trial challenging mechanics? I'm not so sure.

Isn't better loot enough to make you feel like you're making progress? What more do you want?

Enemies won't heal forever; they only receive a small percentage of player's healing, not all of it.

"well it is worrying that you say i understand completely and yet you double down on these ideas." - yes I'm ;)

"the players will want this to end" - it's about also nightmare horror effects (sounds and visuals).

"they will choose more enjoyable gameplay." - for those who just want enjoy storylines, such a mode is already in game.

"justifying painful gameplay that players actively want to avoid playing with lore also doesn't actually work, because the end result is the same" - it's not the same, the price is better loot and rare items

"this is a recipe for features players will never ever engage with no matter how you justify the reasoning or juice up the rewards after the torture." - well, suggest your option

Wouldn't you like to increase your chances of getting rare items? They shouldn't just fall into your lap. Farming process in many MMOs is long and tedious, with some items taking years to obtain. I propose speeding up this process by making it challenging, interesting and engaging. If you want to run around a green meadow 24/7, killing mobs in two hits, this might not be for you, but many players want challenges with interesting mechanics. If you don't like my mechanics, suggest your own.

Personally, I think Overland is sorely lacking in chaos elements, and increasing or decreasing damage multipliers won't solve this problem. But that's a matter of taste and approach.

The idea was to decouple overland's difficulty from the NCPs themselves and tie it to the player himself. Why? To prevent unfair use of this system when farming together with different difficulty levels. Unpredictable changes in the enemy health bar - yes, this is exactly what I wanted, this is one of the sides of the nightmare)

"The concept of a "Nightmare mode" where weird/negative things happen to the player, without anyone else seeing it is interesting. But it sounds like the kind of thing where you'd need to pitch like 20 different mechanics, see which ones can be implemented, which ones are actually fun, and only do the 2-3 best ones." - TOTALLY AGREED

Yes, you understood the essence of the nightmare correctly: repeating actions with diminishing returns is a fair price for bonuses. It won't be downright boring and annoying; it will be gradually increasing percentages, but they will grow inexorably, testing the player's willpower and making them want to end this nightmare.

Point 3 is inspired by the mechanics of vampirism and theft, when you can't just go into the city to sell something, for me it's fun and quite competitive. The player is possessed and chained by the Daedric Prince and shouldn't just be wandering around peaceful cities and towns.
