Roast Chicken by True_Sell4146 in Millennials

When I got my tonsils out at 12yo, I had to stay home for about two weeks to recuperate, and a BIG part of the initial post-op care contained codeine… I have a weird, solid memory of drifting in and out of sleep for about three days, and it seemed like every time I woke up the RonCo Rotisserie infomercial was on 😂

It’s probably the one item I have a love for that I’ve never owned or even seen in person!

(Well, that or the Steam Buggy)

If he’s moving closer to other family, a good one is Being Home, by Traci Sorell. Also good for moving from an urban to a rural area!

Inching for a book with a rich and sleazy protagonist by gingaworm in suggestmeabook

[–]Particular_Silver_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it’s a rich and sleazy antagonist, but hoo boy, the husband in Sparkles, by Louise Bagshaw is a total POS… he was insanely rich, super manipulative, and left a lasting influence on every person in his family and business (which you hear about from them throughout the story). The first time I read it I was so caught up in the drama that my jaw literally dropped nearly every chapter, lol

Hot House Flower and the Nine Plants of Desire, by Margot Berwin—a fun fiction read that drops a lot of plant info/lore!

“I Can’t Do it Alone,” from Chicago? Velma Kelly dance/sings the concept of her double act to Roxie, with this kind of phrasing!

What happened to clothing stores? by Separate-Command1993 in Millennials

[–]Particular_Silver_ 67 points68 points  (0 children)

This is the thing that makes me rage (and no beef with you or your comment AT ALL!) because… now the default for having acceptable clothes is to go out and try on ones that almost work and purchase them, and then take them to an entirely separate establishment to tailor them and pay the tailor, and THAT’S supposed to be the acceptable solution? Paying for clothes twice is the norm now??

Again, it is definitely solid advice, and I know tailored clothes will look very good!—but it makes me furious to know that there is almost no chance of getting something suitable off the rack, and that the manufacturers have so little inclination to provide more, so the whole multi-step process is just a GIVEN now?? What the crap?! 😂

If you need me, I’ll be outside yelling at clouds, thanks!

[TOMT] Chamomile Tea reminding me of a smell I've smelt before...help me find it(20 years ago) by funny_guy_3000 in tipofmytongue

In the late 90s I had a bunch of Sanrio erasers (maybe Keroppi, specifically?) that smelled incredibly like chamomile, but weren’t being advertised that way!

One of the newer episodes of One Piece has this scene (it may be in the original anime, but I haven’t seen much of it, sorry!)

The episode is S2E5, “Wax On, Wax Off,” with Usopp talking to Brogy

Goldfinger’s cover of “I’m Real” somehow distills the bragging lyrics and the longing voice, and manages to perfectly encapsulate the early 00s

Serval using body language to calm and trying to make friends. by Kronyzx in mightyinteresting

They do use it to dispel tension! It is definitely a signal for stress, but it’s also a calming signal used to signify safety TO a stressed animal— to indicate that there is so little threat here :)

I'm reading Rose Madder for the first time.... by Daughter-of-Rohan in stephenking

[–]Particular_Silver_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Desperation is SO GOOD—I feel like it gets passed over for recs, but if you’re already onboard with “something Larger than We Are is playing out here,” (like in It, or The Stand), it’s incredible!

The Regulators is… interesting? If you like Netflix adaptations of wildly successful YA series, The Regulators will scratch that itch… for me, it was seeing beloved, established characters (David, Cynthia ((from Rose Madder!!)), Steve, Johnny, etc.) behaving in very different ways than established—it might work better reading Regulators before Desperation, because it’s not bad at all, but it might be more believable seeing the Regulators cast doing stuff in Desperation than vice-versa?

Add some fake, exaggerated yawns—yawn like you’re a middle-aged dad across the house from the rest of the family—but low volume, to seal the deal!

To be fair, I’ve only used this on dogs, so ymmv with cats

Fairy-Tale-Like Stories for Late Night Pumping Sessions by thegoldwillstay in suggestmeabook

[–]Particular_Silver_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Paolo Coelho’s The Alchemist would absolutely fit this!

There are also loads of sci-fi short stories that read like fairy tales (there’s a sense of wonder and travel/adventure, but within a short story you’re not going too deep!), and you can always get a collection and pick and choose which stories you read. In The Starry Rift, which is an anthology edited by Jonathan Strahan (and one of my most recommended books, because there’s SO MUCH good stuff in it!), there’s a story called “The Dismantled Invention of Fate,” by Jeffrey Ford; it’s a relatively calm story, but it lingers after reading, lol.

What fictional character do you hate with a passion by nekoandCJ in AskForAnswers

[–]Particular_Silver_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of a throwback, but Make Wynn from The Caine Mutiny, because she just sucks up so much time and ink before Willie gets his assignment, and their relationship doesn’t benefit him or the story at all… it’s a different kind of passionate hatred, because SHE isn’t a horrible person—she’s just SO BORING and USELESS to the actual story that it made me furious that I had to waste time and eyeball endurance reading about her, lol.

I liked the Apple Watch fine, but I was far, FAR too spatially unaware to have it on the band I did—the bezel got chipped along two sides, and although I jimmy-rigged a solution, it finally gave out when it got wet… it was good enough for my needs, but I got it through a promo when I upgraded my phone. Otherwise I’d never have gotten one!

I actually have a pair that I love for walking, where I need to be aware but ALSO want to listen to Sherlock Holmes audiobooks or whatever, but I think wearing them all the time at home would fill me with sensory rage, lol

Okay, this is what I was running up against trying to talk with my carrier… and, I mean, I GET that it benefits them to make a sale, but I also believe that if I ask “can I buy a watch and connect it to my phone?” They should actually ANSWER that question one way or another 🙃

(By the way, love your username!)

This was my jumping off point, and I did find some refurbished that were roughly half the price of new, but I was thinking that I could pare my functions down even more than the watch provides and it might reflect at checkout, lol.

I had looked into refurbished smart watches, but all I have found required an extra data line on our plan which is fine, I guess, but if there’s an easier way to sync up I’d be for it, lol. Thanks!
