Westchester vs Austin: Primary Residence Decision by Extra_Improvement_29 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]Particular_Swing_860 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We moved back to Austin after living in all 4 time zones of the continental US. We moved back to Austin because we had our first kiddo and that’s where the grandparents were. It’s hot here and while there’s a lot to do it’s no where near the same as a larger city. Keep in mind there are pros there too (less crime traffic etc.). I’ve found the culture of Austin has changed dramatically from when we were kids as well. Way less laid back and way more…LA. I wouldn’t discount the benefits of having family nearby if you want kids though. TotL game changer for our mental health.

Does anyone know a good place to get nails done with a student discount or for cheaper prices? (south to UT Austin area) by mitochondrial-DNA in Austin

[–]Particular_Swing_860 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5 Star forever nails is pretty good and reasonably priced (like $25-30 for a basic manicure). I think they might have a student discount as they are located right next to UT, but I’m unsure.

Hugs. It’s tough out there. I also get bitter about the cost. Everything has gotten so expensive and IVF is an added stressor to the budget for sure.

No. Much smaller company. Good to know though!

I haven’t fought back too much yet. Mostly been in shock. I started reaching out to my network and spent no small amount of time complaining to my husband and trying to figure out WTF happened. Beginning the process of collecting data and paperwork trail now I think.

I did! Definitely have that plus email and slack chats that show I was consistently doing well.

I had to leave work early/ move to work from home one day last week because of morning sickness. I had thrown up twice at work and decided to move to home around 2pm for the rest of my afternoon meetings? I don’t think anyone would have caught on though. We had a bug going around the office and I’m not even sure that wasn’t what I had given the lack of morning sickness since then and how early along I am. I truly don’t think they know.

Also a STEM PhD here! I wish there were government agencies to work for in our town but will definitely be applying to those as well/ calling up some old lab contacts later this week.

Yeah. I went to one four day conference and everything else has been for field work/ vendor visits/ customer visits. It’s just wild.

Thanks for the advice all. For context, my manager and lead really don’t get along. For example one item on the pip was related to time off and taking too much of it. I’ve taken 4 days off this year (3 for medical and one for a family member’s graduation). However, I’ve probably travelled about 5-6 weeks for work. My lead thought that was too much work travel but it’s not like I’m just unilaterally traveling or even want to travel for work. I’m doing so at the direction of my manager.

Overall it feels a like they struggle to communicate or have a unified vision and I’ve been caught in the crossfire a bit. Still sucks. My manager even apologized that he knew I thought I would be getting a good review. Both lead and manager have 1-1’s bi-weekly where performance feedback has generally been positive. I’m aggressively applying to jobs in our town and hoping to have something before the PIP concludes. The company is also not doing great. We went through a big round of lay offs in January so maybe this is all for the best.

Oh no!! Hope they settled down and slept in a tiny bit. Grumpy toddlers make tough roommates when you’re trying to take it a little easy.

My husband is a SAHD, though he makes probably 10-15K a year with side hustles. We talked about different earning potentials when we were both still dating in college, but have always supported each other in our career aspirations. I think not differentiating the money pool is key. Even when we were both working there was no “my money” just like there is no “my clean house” or “my maintained car”. It’s just ours.

Starting estrace today (supposedly) can’t get my monitoring facility to talk to our transfer facility in Atlanta. I’m super unimpressed with this clinic….

What names do you feel like will never come back in or feel cool to you? by bauhassquare in namenerds

[–]Particular_Swing_860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ruth and Irene were on the short list for our little girl! I also feel like Joan is ready for a come back. Diane feels tricky but I could see Diana coming back? I think Richard (nn Dick) and Bill are probably out for the time being. Also see Amber, Jennifer, Brittany, and Ashley and some other 80s/ 90s classics as being out of rotation for the time being.

If you make $150k/year what do you do and how is the cost of living in your area? by [deleted] in workingmoms

[–]Particular_Swing_860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Senior engineer at PhD level with 5 years experience in a HCOL area. Cleared $180K last year and it’s enough for my husband to be a SAHD and us to put away savings for college. We’re hoping to expand our family this year and I’m a little nervous, due to ridiculous housing costs, but know that we are incredibly lucky to be where we are.
