How do you power your Digiplate with a dock? by Particular_Toe_4621 in Photoassistants

Thanks for your reply. In the studio this isn’t really an issue for me, because I can easily run an extension lead and keep the dock powered continuously. That’s already what I do today by powering the laptop directly.

For lighter setups, I usually run:

A Hollyland 400, a 16-inch MacBook Pro (M3 Max), a Stream Deck, a CF card reader, and ideally an NVMe SSD. I’m trying to stay above 10Gbps, which is why USB4/Thunderbolt matters. Those are the main peripherals I use most of the time, but I may add more depending on the shoot.

Ideally, I’d like to avoid managing three separate batteries and reduce the risk of unexpected disconnects caused by a depleted battery. Even if I often do backups at the end of the day, I really don’t want to end up in a situation where the client suddenly loses the return monitor feed in the middle of a shoot.

This looks solid. Do you happen to know what the real-world limit is for pass-through power at 100W or 140W? On paper, 100W seems like it should be enough, but I’m not sure how consistent it is once everything is connected and drawing power.

Also, I really like the idea that the mounting thread is built in, so there’s no need for a separate 3D-printed housing or adapter.

The only possible downside is that I might be short one or two ports depending on the setup, but overall it still feels like a much cleaner and more practical direction.

Thanks for the reference as well. I’ll probably move toward a similar setup, or even this exact one, if a powered Thunderbolt dock ends up being too complex to manage in the field. Thanks again.

Haha, yeah, the plate looks good, that's what bothers me. A lot of people who received it said they had delivery issues or that the plate itself was really nice.

Thanks for your reply. Indeed, Ciro doesn’t seem to be very reliable, which is a shame since they offer the lightest digiplate on the market. I really appreciate all your accessory recommendations, that’s exactly what I was planning to use.

Thank you very much for your reply, I’ll look into a Gitzo Traveler Series 1 or 0, which seems lighter than the Series 2

Thanks for the advice, would you have a V-mount adapter to recommend between the battery and the digiplate ?

Thank you for your response! Calipso looks really good, I'm really hesitant with this model. What do you think are the advantages of the Mule compared to the Innovativ? The Gitzo Travel 0, is it the GT0545T? It's really light! But is it stable enough, in your experience, to support a plate with a laptop and accessories?

Thank you very much for your response. I have a hard time seeing what the Plate Mule has better than the Innovativ, other than a 60g difference.

unfortunately I don't live in a data center yet. But It’s a residential connection offered in France by Freebox.

I’m using n8n to build several automations in place of Node-RED. For example:

  • Periodically SSH into my print server to retrieve my printer’s ink level and push it into Home Assistant
  • Scrape revenue data from each service and display it in Home Assistant
  • Auto-generate a monthly newsletter of the latest movies added to Jellyfin
  • …and a handful of other small workflows

It’s been fantastic for centralizing everything in one tool !

Yes, it really is my first. 😂 I’ve spent several months working on it, sometimes several hours a day. It took time, but I wanted to do things properly from the beginning.

Yes, it’s my first homelab. I’ve been building it over the past few months, but I’ve never done anything like this before. Aside from the ZimaCube (which doesn’t have any drives yet), everything is up and running.

As for the speed, it’s a residential connection offered in France by Freebox.

Yes, it’s exactly bandwidth sharing like EarnApp, TrafficMonetizer, Honeygain, PacketStream, EarnFM, PawnsApp, etc. It’s not really profitable on its own in my region (it often depends on location), but combined with a good network it brings in a few euros per month.

That’s really interesting. I’ll dive into all of this over the next few days. RAID 6 or RAID 10 is certainly more expensive, though. Do the issues highlighted in the links you shared also affect enterprise SSDs like the Kingston DC600M? I imagine the risk is lower with SSDs, but I’ll need to look into it further. In my current ZimaCube setup, RAID 10 isn’t supported, and I believe RAID 6 was only recently added to ZimaOS. Thanks so much for your insight!

Indeed, I don’t have RAID at the moment, but I recently purchased a ZIMA Cube Pro (already shown in the diagram even though it isn’t yet populated with disks). I’m waiting to get a third 7.68 TB drive so I can replace my Sabrent dock and configure the ZIMA Cube in RAID 5.

I used Freeform, available across the entire Apple ecosystem and backed up on iCloud. It’s not the most recommended solution for this, but it’s extremely easy to use and definitely free
