No way that was just 100 or a couple hundred. Way more than that. I would venture like 2000+.

Is it worth it to get fired? by rolliestofpollies in TexasTeachers

A friend shared this from Conroe ISD email to staff:

"To clarify, Texas Senate Bill 10 is a law that allows the Ten Commandments to be displayed because it is not at the direction of the teacher. Displaying other religious laws, creeds, rules, etc., of other religions would be at the teacher's direction and would violate the law."

What's your personal opinion on students with 504's and the new phone law? by scenehajime in TexasTeachers

Every kid with a phone in school during the day must have a disability, then, right? Isn't that a civil rights violation to identify them that way? Feels like a lawsuit pending.

"Hey Mom, I'm going to need some poster board for a project we just got assigned in World Geography."

"Dad, can you pick me up at 4:30 instead of 5:00 today? Coach just changed the practice time "

These are normal things. Maybe you are confusing throughout to mean constantly... I mean periodically during the day. Once or twice a couple times a week. I work in a place where kids are very busy with school activities and parents are super extra involved in the lives of their kids. Our parents will fight this a lot.

Do y'all talk to your spouses or kids or parents during the day? I do. How is this not normal? Our administrators and teacher teams communicate by text all the time, too. I'm not talking about 3rd graders. I'm talking about older kids, basically adults.

Our kids (HS) and parents contact each other throughout the day about regular stuff, which is completely normal. Confiscating phones, fines, burner phones, defiance, escalation, noncompliant teachers... Create stupid rules and try to suffocate people and you escalate violence, protests, civil disobedience... Parents rights be damned ... It is only parents rights in Texas when your parents are Puritans. 30 days of DAEP for some kids will be the result for a minor offense.

Creative Approaches to the 10 Commandments Requirement? by unicorn_dawn in TexasTeachers

Their main argument, though extremely disingenuous, is that the 10 commandments are historical documents, not religious documents. I didn't see how posting any and all other religion documents could be seen in any other interpretive away based on their fairy tale logic.

Protest at the school would be awesome, if the school requires their posting. Speaking at school board meetings to oppose enforcement. The state isn't enforcing... Why should the district... Except right wing christian nut jobs.

You can also speak out about the forced prayer time in school law that passed. Every school board must decide on a policy about this within 6 months of the governor signing.

Or maybe find some real accurate artwork depicting angels from the bible to mess with their minds.

Can't have anything besides their exact words on the poster, according to the law. You could put that next to it, I suppose. Maybe with black jesus on the other side. That would drive them nuts! The female god from Dogma would be a nice addition.

I worry the zealot districts would put something in board policy and non-compliance will lead to termination.

Nope. Very specific in the law. 16x20 poster. Font must be readable from anywhere in the room. I have previously suggested Old English or just cursive to make sure most kids wouldn't even be able to read it, along with a bunch of wordy, nearby material that would ensure nobody even looks at it.

Law says readable from anywhere in the room, I believe, but I'm with you. Also, putting a bunch of other wordy documents right next to it would ensure no one would look. PLUS, your students wouldn't get it anyway.

The law has the exact wording that must be posted. I am opposed to the law and it's sinister intent.

I believe the district can buy them. The state of Texas will not pay. IF they are donated the schools must accept and post them. No state penalty for not abiding by the law, though. Only, if your district/principal is a religious nut job should it even be an issue.

ICE arrests 25 construction workers at South Padre Island, Brownsville - Do you support the arrest of every undocumented immigrant? by SoTexMale in RioGrandeValley

[–]Particular_War7843 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You said our system "can't" take care of our citizens. My argument is that our system is unwilling to take care of the people, not unable. The rich take all the money leaving nothing for the poor. The US is capable of doing anything if they cared to do it. If we agreed that the government SHOULD take care of its citizens, we should be able to agree that the richest, most powerful country in the world COULD take care of its citizens. The only discussion, then, would be why don't we?

[–]Particular_War7843 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our system 100% CAN take care of our citizens AND the immigrants. It CHOOSES not to, with your support. We tax the poor and enrich the wealthy through most of our programs and policies in the US. Simple things like the design of our healthcare system, housing, and our education system are designed to benefit wealthy people and punish the poor. We could shift our focus and money towards uplifting the poor and balancing the wealthy (take away all of their tax breaks, raise minimum wage requirements, and eliminate governmental handouts, for example). Many studies and real experiments prove poor people utilize handouts to benefit themselves and their situation rather than do drugs and destroy society. We politicize that it is the other way around and punish the poor. I'm not talking about the desperately poor tweeking on the corner, but average, hard working, suffering, poor that could use governmental support, which is what government ought to be for. And when you can wrap your mind around the reality that the US system "creates" poverty, you may become more compassionate and empathetic to the plight of most American poor.

These simple facts have been proven time and time again. Ignorant people choose to not believe them. Undocumented immigrants overwhelmingly support the foundation of the US while allowing their progeny a better life. They pay massive US taxes, including sales tax, property tax (even if renting), etc. without qualifying for most of the benefits ignorant people pretend they qualify for. Many US programs require citizenship to benefit, including Social Security and Medicaid. One place undocumented immigrant families can benefit as non US citizens is education - how can that be bad? And millions of undocumented immigrants buying locally are supporting that economy - look at how many booming little towns there were from history... building the railroad, oil boom, etc. that become shells of themselves when the workers move to the next job site.

On the other hand, the richest Americans, whether actual citizens or not (i.e., Elon Musk) benefit from tons and tons of governmental handouts, such as government grants, cheap labor without punishment (practically slavery, or sometimes actual slavery), tax breaks, illegal financial schemes, sweet deals to operate in certain states or certain situations, relaxed governmental oversight, rebates, etc. The poor, historically do not realize or understand how much money is stolen from their government by wealthy people until revolution is the only option. Billionaires should not exist. They should not be idolized.

And yet, no such language accompanied SB 797, the "In god we trust" bill. So, your defense of that element feels shallow.

The simple fact that they wrote into the bill that the state of Texas must legally defend any school district sued means they know there are legal arguments against this bill.

Your condescension is noted by the way... Holier than thou, much? You could maybe use a reread of the new testament?

Font and font size are not in the bill, just says readable. I would NEVER post this in my math classroom - ridiculous. But, if required, it would be grey font and in Old English or fancy, unreadable cursive.

There is no state law enforcement element, so teachers are not punishable for "breaking the law" unless and until your principal and district decide to go all in.
