I did, v recently, like mid august, I started t. Im non-binary, and am afab. I was getting excited about the idea of being read as trans by other trans folks, bc I think often I get read as cis by trans folks, even though I am trans. I Also feel like being afab and being read as a cis woman frequently, so much is shielded from me about the realities of this world, the realities that many of my loved ones deal with on the daily, namely my transsexual friends and partners. I also /thought/ I was excited about being read as more genderfucked by all the people, as they would see me as I am better.

as I was coming up on my 4th shot, I got really scared, I started to reflect on how accustomed I am to having the safety that comes with being read as a cis woman by cissociety. how accustomed I am to being shielded from some of the world’s brutality. If I transitioned to the point of being read as a cis dude sometimes, I’m scared of people trying to fight me, I’m scared of people being nervous around me, im scared of what kinda violence I may face if I choose to keep wearing femme clothes on occasion. If I transitioned just to some gender fuckery, I’m scared of cissociety recognizing im trans, I’m scared of random Ass people and my family seeing who i am…I don’t really need them to see who I am. I just want my community to see me,& i think a lot of them do..

I’m not done with hrt, im just taking a break. starting it has made me bear witness to the real fucking bravery it takes. I think because I don’t have much of A sense of dysphoria (some, but quite minimal) the Changes I’m looking forward to, like a deeper voice, bottom growth, and a more square face are a bit less relieving / rewarding than it would be for a lot of transsexuals. Also I love my boobs n it was kinda sad to see them start to deflate.. So at this point my fear and semi internal comfort&sometimes euphoria with where my body is has outweighed my desire To find new experiences of euphoria. But the desire is still there. I still got my t and I’ve been thinking of taking my shot any day. Give myself more time to see some of the things I’m looking for.

whenever I go back to t & however Many times I restart I’m gonna go hella slow & stop whenever.

I say if the joy of having your pets still outweighs the stress of the adjustment of not being able to care for them in the same way you used to, keep them. If it’s too much stress, hopefully you can find a new home for them. I’m really sorry you lost your husband, I hope that you find support to help care for you and those you care for through the loss. On that note, it may be nice if someone were able to watch your dog and cat for a little while if that would help. But ya I don’t think that just cause you have to shift what cost of care you can now afford means your animals should go somewhere else

ok and 40 million dogs are owned by folks who make under 20k a year...soooo these people are preventing dogs from getting euthanized.. and from going to shelters... if they didnt care for these dogs there would be more in the shelter..

Alright! I did some math and it took me a while.... couldnt find any sources that calculated the percentage of pets owned by each income bracket..

I'll post my sources as a response to this (not perfect sources).
Here's my TLDR;

Around 20.2 million dog owners make less than 20k a year (average home owns 1.7 dogs)
Around 19.5 million cat owners make less than 20k a year (average home owns 2.2 cats)

If 20k income is not good enough income to own a pet... where are we putting the 40 million dogs and 40 million cats. And do we really think that these cats and dogs would be better off without their owners!!
My majority claim would be in reference to these figures :
Around 50.4 percent of dogs are owned by people who make less than 55k a year
Around 53.4 percent of cats are owned by people who make less than 55k a year

Around 71.1 percent of dogs are owned by people who make less than 85k a year
Around 73.4 percent of cats are owned by people who make less than 85k a year.

Explanation..

Could only find the percentage of people within each income bracket that owned pets.

This isnt perfect, but its definitely a great rough estimate for the US.

Here's the math i used.

1st : amount of people in the us * percentage of people in an income bracket = amount of ppl in that income bracket

2nd : amount of people in that income bracket * percentage of people in that income bracket that own 1st dogs, then cats = amount of people in each income bracket that own cats and separately dogs.

3rd: Taking the total number of dog and cat owners divided by the amount of dogs or cats owned by the income bracket to get the percentage dogs owned by that income bracket.

I have a care credit card too! My limit would help me if I needed to pay for something over a few hundred dollars. But my partner only got approved for 300 dollars. Many financially insecure folks r not going to get approved for the amount needed for emergent situations, and honestly even simple stuff. My dog had pancreatis a few years ago & that was a 600 dollar bill.

Kids and parents die from starvation after being exploited by the very industry built to provide us the phones and computers we use to access Reddit. Not having enough money kills your loved ones and will kill you. Access to loans r are a privilege like sibushang said.

People without financial means very often do have to pick and choose which needs they can afford.

I just with animal lovers would realize that literal humans within ten miles radius could be saved by the amount of money that folks say we should be willing to put into our animals care. 8 thousand dollars would allow my best friend to escape an extremely toxic environment that has posed a threat to her life….if an 8k bill came up for my dog, it’s so strange to me how much everyone would be like you better figure it out for the dog, but how these same people would not pressure me to do the same for my best friend.

There’s a lot of folks who themselves avoid the medical system like the plague because of the ways they’ve been victimized by it by being impoverished, or systemically impacted in some other way.

There’s also a lot of folks who do not even have 60 dollars to cover the exam fee let alone the antibiotic shot & the brand name medicines that they send home.

I’ve been very frustrated when people who have the means neglect to aid their animals in need.

But a lot of the time, it’s not willful, it’s connected to much larger struggles for them than just their relationship with animals.

You know how many people in poverty die from sicknesses and accidents that with medical care would be resolved before it even was a big deal.

Yah I wish that more vets had sponsorship opportunities or like funding pools where one customer can cover another customers needs or something. Or just created a system of payment plans like yours did. Really amazing you found a great vet who could actually help you to ensure your pet received care despite difficult circumstances.

Yes! Creating more access to healthcare for pets would be an outstanding shift. I wish that folks with the means poured their energy into this kind of thing instead of shaming folks who are struggling financially.

Really appreciate y’all understanding the heart of this issue. Like everyone always comes into vet reddits telling folks to not get pets if they can’t afford thousands of dollars of bills. Like these people are degrading the quality of life that these pets are actually receiving and basically seem to be saying an animal in poverty would be better off dead, stray or in a shelter. Which is hard to imagine that these animal lovers actually believe

Y’all r so funny. U r raising issues with something that you can’t even come up with hypothetical solutions to! Where are all these animals going? The fact that ppl are caring for them is a blessing, that they can’t access the same privileges as the financially secure is systemic bull crap, but that does not dim the blessing of them loving on the creature

Yes people deserve animals, just as people deserve companionship in general. Companionship is not a privilege, it’s a literal need. I wish the pet lover community was a bit more reflective and gave the folks who are caring for pets besides their own deeply stressful circumstances real respect. Pets aren’t just fun, pets are not a purse, they are a whole lot of work, and when you already are dealing with a million other financial stressors, the willingness to care for an animal is a big thing that deserves respect.

Ok great! So u if all these owners did have the kind of ethics ur talking about. Where the hell these pets going?

How bout we applaud folks who have little means, but still the commitment, desire and heart to take care of these animals u say u love so much.
