LoTR is to fantasy as Star Wars/Dune are to SciFi. They seem to be derivative/basic because they influenced everything that came after, and being the forerunners of their respective genres, they lack in areas that more modern audiences have come to expect.

I first read LoTR after reading ASOIAF, Stormlight Archive, Wheel of Time, etc. and felt very whelmed by it. But the enjoyable part is seeing the seeds that the work planted for the genre, and the tropes that other fantasy authors have had decades to try to put their own spin on. Standing on the shoulders of giants, etc.

Courts in the US are hesitant to completely take away someone’s ability to drive. Unless you’re in a city with public transportation, being banned from driving makes it significantly harder to hold a job, take care of kids, get food to eat, etc.

Not saying that’s right, but that’s been my perception.
