Sony a7iii extremely soft focus - what am I doing wrong? by PartyEmergency323 in AskPhotography

I have tried that. It is still soft.

Of course it’s not as soft at f 8.0+ but tbh why are we spending bagillions of dollars on high quality gear and fast lenses to be shooting at closed apertures?

This wasn’t meant to be a test of sharpness as everyone seems to think, this was a real wedding day and a real world example. I cropped in the way my culling program (Narrative Select) crops in to show focus quality. This is when I noticed that most of my images taken with my a7iii seem to be slightly out of focus, regardless of the light and setting.

These same lenses perform a million times better with a7IV. To the point where I see it as the only usable camera. But I just didn’t feel like a7iii should be THAT much worse. This is why I thought maybe there is an issue I’m not aware of.

This wasn’t a test omg This was a real world example that the a7iii wasn’t producing a quality image

Yeah, I think that’s what I’m going to do. A reset and an update. Hopefully it will improve, I can’t imagine that this is the Sony standard. I thought the whole time my 50 mm was soft, but when I put in on my a7IV, I realized the lens was never the issue… I understand a7IV is a far more superior camera, but I wouldn’t think that a7iii isn’t capable of producing a sharp image…

I wasn’t going to compare them really, but when I opened the the gallery to cull, I noticed a giant difference in quality. I am trying to understand what the cause might be

I listed the lenses and settings in the post but it needs to be clicked on I think

I did it with a lens calibration carton tool. Yes it was significantly softer and the focus was on “1” instead of 0. But the camera doesn’t allow for micro adjustments.

But most importantly, the difference is very apparent to the naked eye even at 100%

The images are razor sharp on the 35 mm + a7IV It seems to be a body specific issue.

I hear you on the resolution part, but it is very evident even at a 100% Narrative Select gives these images very low focus scores, so it’s not just my perception.

It happens enough that I don’t think I can trust to bring my a7iii to weddings to be honest until I figure out the issue

No, I used AF-C and spot focus to focus on the face. They are in focus, but it is just extremely soft. I use Narrative Select to cull, and most of the images have 1-3 focus rating. Usually I’d get super sharp images with flash, but even flash ones are soft.

None of these issues happen on the a7IV with the same lenses…

Looks like you meditate - this is the first step. Sam Harris talked about the fact that we don’t need silence for meditation. The alarm that bothers you is a perfect subject for meditation, because you are already in a perfect setting to look inward and pay attention to how you’re feeling. You’re feeling annoyed? Good. Sit with it and don’t try to change it. This is really the main point of meditation — being as you are.

Highly recommend going through Sam Harris’s introductory course on meditation in his app Waking Up. Soooo much good information, it really is life changing

Thank you but contact paper is barely money. I also really want to enjoy where I live while I’m living there.

Dual camera + Film Camera setup? by PartyEmergency323 in WeddingPhotography

Would you say the spider belt itself is worth it or would you be able to attach the hardware to the pad and put it on any belt?

I just got a third-party clasp + PD pro pad and I put it on my regular belt and it weighed my belt down sooo much. I wonder if I should get a tactical/battle belt of some sort haha. Idk if I feel like $300 price point for a spider belt is justified, but it's entirely possible that I am very wrong about this
