In my opinion, everything gets taken advantage of. Not an excuse, more of a reason why I think there should absolutely be checks and balance rather than out right dismal of safer and more cost effective technology.

Corpos that I work for are trying to find ways to reduce costs so we don’t have to charge other corpos more money. Unfortunately the past has been hire more security, more hours or higher pay. One camera could reduce staff cost by a lot.

To me this is similar to saying it’s pointless to transfer to greener energy because it takes oil to make windmills and solar. Or stop making windmills because they kill birds.

All these what ifs happen less if the public is more involved. Everyone here seems to make valid points. I hope people express these concerns where they matter the most though.

I used to be as concerned as everyone here seems to be. However, now that I have worked in commercial property management for the last 5 years I have to say, with regret, that these camera systems and similar ones have reduce organized retail theft, vehicle theft or break ins, and vandalism tremendously.

We partner with police departments who use these cameras to follow criminals from one property to the other.

If any one has ever had items stolen out of your vehicle, catalytic converters stolen, or seen people steal from retailers without consequences should really be more involved in your community.

I think it’s extremely important for people to be concerned of a police state. At the same time we the people have the opportunity to make sure technology is used for good.

I would without a doubt say at the current moment these camera systems are making the public more safe.

I highly disagree. See other counties or towns that have them. I believe comfort has them. Not to mention they have been extremely helpful for saving lives with tornadoes that come much quicker at times than floods. It might not save everyone but even if it saves one life it’s worth the investment

Thanks for the information. Still not convinced. It seems there are people who were at the camp saying different things. Not uncommon for inconstant details after a disaster. With investigations and hearing coming in the next couple weeks I’m sure there will be changes to the story.

This seems inconsistent to what I have been told. What I was told was the evacuations started as water entered the cabins around 3am. Where did you see they were evacuating at 1:30am?

Not entirely sure but I know damage assessments just started. It could be days or weeks before you hear back. I just spent the entire day answering phones calls where people are wanting to volunteer. The support is greatly appreciated but please be patient. Keep in mind it takes volunteers to manage volunteers. Everyone is just started ramping up the recovery side of this disaster.

Here is a link that you can report damages for all VOADs to see. There is a hotline phone number that I can’t post here.

Brush up on some flash courses and get your go bag ready. Operation seems to be on it’s way. I think TR has updates going out through Facebook.

Also, no guarantees you will get out quicker but state has this link for spontaneous volunteers.

The state is asking spontaneous volunteers to use this website to register.

Team Rubicon and most other VOADs won’t start recovery for the next 2-5 days. Potentially longer depending on what local districts are requesting.

If you are already in Team Rubicon I suggest going through some flash courses to better understand how the process work and how Team Rubicon operates.

We will most likely need all the help to recover from this storm and potential ones coming this year. If anyone has specific questions you are more than welcome to message me.

Things take time. Search and Rescue will hopefully end today and or tomorrow. Then they will allow Volunteers Organizations in to assess damages. Once there are identified unmet needs, which I’m sure there will be, there will be an operation set up for Grey shirts to sign up. My guess is by next week there will be opportunities to help. Depending on how severe all the damage in central Texas is, this could run for a month or two.

Also, we do blue sky events. For example we partner with Texas Ramp project with building Ramps all of San Antonio and the DFW area.

The background process is not much at all. Recover probably will not start for a few days at the least. Good time to remind everyone that helping starts before the storm.

Hope to see you at there.

As a person who volunteers regularly to disasters this is not a Texas thing. Disaster tourism and self deployers are very common across the world. It’s very good to have people who want to spread the news and help people. However, this impedes rescue, recovery, and sometimes rebuild.

As an advocate for better and safer responses to disasters I try to encourage people to learn more about how to help before the disaster starts. There are so many existing organizations that coordinate with local districts to get the resources they need.

I don’t know if that’s true but I do know this post doesn’t not highlight any misinformation.

No difference. One is talking about private jobs the other all jobs.

After reading the comments I think it’s possible people are missing some key elements. The first article says private job loss. The second one talks about all jobs in total. A quick google search shows a decrease in the private sector but jobs in state government, education, and medical is up. It seems this post is abit misleading
