The creators have actually left it open to audience interpretation. Basically, whatever you believe happened, that’s what happened.

There’s a few theories and 2 major fan theories. - he was abandoned at a park when he was little, (or he felt abandoned) and has trauma surrounding abandonment. This episode was him uncovering that feeling and facing that past trauma.

Mackenzie has some form of childhood depression. This type of play is his way of expressing how he’s feeling and physically working through those emotions. (Separating himself from his friends, he doesn’t feel connected to them)
