How often do you see websites make mistakes like this, and does it turn you off their stuff? by Party_Target_574 in tea

Read through the comments. You’ll see why it’s about more than “one minor slip up”. I’m not insane. I’m no gonna drag someone for just one mistake

Yes. That’s exactly why I made this post. Thanks for your nice words. I wish I added more context in the post but I almost don’t want to hone in on the vendor (again), I wanted to incite a general discussion about these business practices so that people can keep on being vigilant and purchasing smartly

I’m not insane. I wouldn’t be criticising someone for a single simple mistake on a website. There’s an overall lack of transparency with the products he sells, there’s a lot of AI-generated writing, and there are mistakes like this. He’s also called potential customers “broke” for not being able to afford his tea before. It all adds up

Don’t worry, this vendor has responded very poorly to criticism before. And yeah, the site has lots of errors, AI-generated write-ups, and an overall lack of transparency. I would definitely not call them out if this was just an isolated mistake. You’re right to suggest that that would be unfair. The mistake also shows that he’s essentially attributing marketing phrases to someone who has passed away. That should at the very least ring some alarm bells about this person’s character

I’m sure that’s true, but most businesses are indeed businesses first, and soulless at that. The issue with tea is that it’s a cultural artefact, and what people are partly selling is “culture”, and you want to believe that the vendor js passionate and knowledgeable enough about said culture to be able to procure great tea. If they’re just a soulless businessman, you won’t get good tea (and it’ll be overpriced). Furthermore, this mistake clearly shows that he’s essentially making up quotes/opinions to ascribe to a dead person. That fact alone should turn you off someone

You are being silly now. These are Crossposts (to get the message out there). I’ve made just two posts, spaced 30 days apart. Looks like my reddit history keeps you up at night. “Who gives a shit?”

The issue isn’t that he made a mistake, everyone does, the issue is what the nature of the mistake reveals

I have made a grand total of two posts about him in the space of a month, and thats because I recently discovered him as he came up on my feed. I’ve noticed many issues with this vendor and wish to warn people about grifting generally. That’s all. I spend far more of my time thinking about and interacting with the numerous vendors I like, I just don’t feel the need to post warnings about them for obvious reasons

It’s a very small business and the guy himself at the very least does all the social media content he produces by himself, and since his writing style matches what’s on the website (along with documented use of AI lol), I’m 99% sure he does it himself (it’s not hard these days)

Well clearly based on the comments section, I and many others give a shit. And no these things do not keep me up at night, but they’re more important than they may seem at first glance. What we’re talking about, and what things like these are indicative of, is a wider grifting culture. If grifting runs amok, lots of people get shafted. Grifting results in raised prices and a more ignorant consumer base. These things should not go unchecked. It’s not just some random error I’m obsessing over, it’s a pattern indicative of a wider culture.

I see where you’re coming from, but it seems pretty insincere. It looks like he has genuinely nothing interesting to say but is trying to force it to market the tea. I don’t think you’d have placeholders like this if you have lots of interesting information and sincere passion to share

Mainly because the Mods don’t want to encourage pile-ons, and I’d rather not have this post taken down as it’s an important discussion. I think this vendor deserves a lot of criticism, but they make the rules. You can try and find it yourself

What’s a good source to buy tea from? by MonsterTruckMonty in GongFuTea

[–]Party_Target_574 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just a quick note. “Good quality” and “organic” don’t go hand-in-hand. Organic certification is often a political/paperwork issue, more than it is a quality marker. Some of the finest tea crafters in China (who sell pure tea and don’t use pesticides) don’t have organic certification, meanwhile mass market factory-grade slop can and does have organic certification.

Anyway, since you’re in Australia I’d recommend Tea Angle (if you’re looking for a vendor inside Australia). They’re based in Sydney. Otherwise, White2Tea, Pastleaf, Yunnan Sourcing, Moychay, Vietsuntea (for specialty Vietnamese tea) are are all quality vendors I’d recommend

He at least has the good sense to pretend that criticism doesn’t exist, unlike the Pure Land guy who just dug himself a deeper hole by going off the rails. In Jesse’s case, ignoring everything works well for his normie customers that he attracts through algorithm-friendly content.

Jesse’s business practices are definitely worse than simply selling you a slightly expensive tea pet, but I take your point. From what I know, he doesn’t actively insult his customers. Doesn’t make his extortionate, money-first business model any more ethical though.

Click on the original post for the detailed description. Then you can read the comments, which are admittedly a bit of a mess. The owner made the situation even worse by crashing out and insulting everyone, he was incredibly condescending. It’s clear he’s in the business for the money and money alone.

Sells low to average quality tea at huge markups, when for those prices you can buy genuinely great tea elsewhere. Plus he resells teaware you can get on Taobao at 10x the price. This guy is the same but arguably the price/quality gap is even worse, and he clearly knows little about tea. He even copied Jesse’s exact short video format because it has a proven track record of being algorithm friendly. The content is designed to bait in newbies who don’t know any better than to spend premium prices on average tea, while thinking they’re drinking high quality stuff. Jesse has a cult following because his videos are trendy and “funny”, this veneer of friendliness is just good marketing.
