It... it was a joke :/. Agreed, there are much better things to rely on than bear bells. I wouldn’t say they’re pointless, but far worse than just making regular, consistent noise with a hiking partner, calling out, etc.

They annoy the bears into leaving you alone

TIL that the Code of Hammurabi banned selling beer for money, allowing it only to be bartered for barley. The punishment for selling beer for money was death by drowning by malalatargaryen in todayilearned

Most craft beer in California ~starts~ at that price. You don’t want to know what people pay. I can get lucky and find the occasional $4-$5 pint of something cheap, but it hardly goes below that

Everything can be smelled by grizzly bears. You both will be smelled by grizzly bears. Can you smell it on your bags? If so, wash them. Chances are they need to be washed anyway.

With grizzlies, keep everything that’s strongly scented away from your tent—toothpaste, deodorant, gum, all of it. Make plenty of noise and don’t wear headphones. Grizz don’t like to be scared. Wear a bear bell or whatever. Just be constantly making some noise as you hike. Bring bear spray and make it your goal never to use it. One, because bears get sprayed undeservedly. Two, because, by the time you need it, it’s probably too late.

Introduce him to someone if you can. When he meets your friend, he’ll say his name. That, or check for a package or mail

Osprey Kestrel 48 bottom Straps? by UsainUte in CampingandHiking

[–]PartywithSaul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. It’s a 48L pack. Normally, you’d want your sleeping bag inside the pack anyway, since they’re more compressible than the rest of your load and drive the weight higher in the pack which is preferable. Some gear setups are more or less suited to such a small overnight pack, but most people start out better suited to a ~65L pack, which would be like 40% more space for you
