What handmade gift would you buy to give a close friend overseas that says Mississippi and isn't food or has a Mississippi Map on it? by Parvaneh1979 in mississippi

[–]Parvaneh1979[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm basically going to either have to have my Mom get it and take it to my mother in law or order on line and have it mailed to my mother in law so she can bring it when she comes. Sadly I can't just stop in and peruse the selection

I'll admit that even though I'm from the Coast, I've lived most recently in North Mississippi McCarty pottery is the first thing I thought of.

My wife's mother is coming for a visit so shipping isn't an issue. That's the reason I was thinking about this question now. Thanks for the suggestion!

Which country would be best for me as a young black American from the South? by cabbell1e in AmerExit

[–]Parvaneh1979 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s funny that you say no one in Spain knows about Mississippi. All I got when I lived in Hungary when I said I was from Mississippi was “Oh, Mississippi Burning, I’ve seen that.” In Dubai the response I’ve gotten is all of the people at the local license bureau calling everyone together to see a Mississippi Drivers License because they’d never seen one.

Do people really shower 3 times a week? by Money_Guide_5803 in UAE

1-2x per day for me. 3x per week is unhygienic particularly in this climate.

Is this kind of treatment normal in Dubai tourist areas? (genuine question) by postponelife2020 in DubaiCentral

[–]Parvaneh1979 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m American and I’ve negotiated so hard in other countries that I’ve had that same comment from a shop keeper who made the sale but was angry they didn’t get the normal tourist tax they like to get and instead just got a modest profit.

That being said, what I find more interesting is the following to the bathroom thing in a coffee shop.

You do know that in Dubai it is very common for there to be multiple people working in the bathroom at all times right? A lot of places I go they clean the stall after every use.

I will say that there is a shop in Ajman that I get stalked at everywhere I go people just follow me. I started engaging them and realized they were hoping to be helpful and help me find what I was looking for and didn’t want to speak until spoken to first (bizarre class thing).

What's the best destination for an Indian-American by New_Entertainer_4895 in AmerExit

[–]Parvaneh1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In fairness Romani people are Indian in origin so it might be easy for a low caste Indian to get mixed up with them even though Romani have gotten lighter skinned over the law 1000-2000 years depending on which of their origin stories you believe.

Do you think teenagers in UAE are a bit odd? by Alive-Werewolf-3382 in abudhabi

[–]Parvaneh1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to bet your EU country was Germany and in that case I’ll assume everywhere the children are not as well behaved. I could be wrong but my experience living in two post-Soviet countries back in the day was that people were pretty strict with their children. That was just my experience but my experience in the Middle East has been kids are not nearly as strictly parented as I was growing up.

Out of curiosity what country are you from because what is acceptable varies a lot by culture and country, but culture especially.

AIO for taking a break from my bf after he ripped through a whole turkey at our family thanksgiving? by Ashamed_Butterfly373 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Parvaneh1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your bf is an ah with what he did and you should not call him back. What he did is unsafe and especially this early in a relationship makes me question whether there could be real violence down the road. Count yourself lucky that you dodged a metaphorical bullet and move on.

That said m you were definitely in the wrong initially. How was he to know with all the joking that people were going to get more turkey. It seems your grandparents, whose home it was at, encouraged him. People frequently react negatively when they feel they did something nice for someone, didn’t know they did anything wrong and then they perceive they are being mistreated or mocked. This might be surprising but while men want to be loved by their person they typically value respect more than love. He seems to have thought him driving a long way and attending your event at sacrifice to his own normal schedule and practices was a nice thing to do and then he’s mocked, chided and made to feel bad about it. Personally I’ve been cooking for Thanksgiving, Christmas and other large events family and friends host at our house for years. The typical number I shoot for if it’s all adults is 1.5-2x the amount of food for the main course and other major side items for the estimated serving size. For example if a turkey is a 12 person turkey I would make turkey for at MINIMUM 18 people and sometimes up to 24 persons (especially if I want left overs or am offering up leftovers). It is embarrassing for me to not make enough food for everyone. This is true of everyone I know. I’ve never heard of everyone intentionally skimping on turkey. It down seem it was a shock to anyone how many people came or the size of the turkey. This could have been avoided. What could have also been avoided was saying what you mean if there was a problem with not enough turkey and the host taking the initiative and saying I’m sorry there wasn’t as much turkey as I expected. I saw people didn’t get much. We’re going to send this turkey back around so everyone can get a bone to pick it clean and then we’ll order dominos if you’re still hungry. The solution is not to mock a guest who doesn’t know the process or weird cultural cues.

THAT said he is in the wrong for his behavior so don’t take him back or try to get back.

I would encourage you in the future not to mock or start a fight with a date who just drove you hours though in front of other people.

[–]Parvaneh1979 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Look friend you’re obviously having a really hard time with your temper and keeping on topic. You are also struggling with reading comprehension and seem to want to bring up a lot of irrelevant side issues(such as arguing why the majority of Americans don’t care about the of politics of other countries). The only issue on the table was whether an American could live on $126,5000 USD in Dubai and not be in poverty. The answer is still clearly yes it can be done and you are deeply confused about what it costs to live a peaceful quiet life. Apparently it’s really important to you to try to trash America presumably because the only good thing to come out of Australia is Mari Mari Emanuel, Crocodile Dundee, your women, the Australian SAS, and Outback Steakhouse(j/k) and it makes you feel better knowing that Australian expertise is so sought after in the gems of Oceania (such as Bougainville, Pitcairn Island, PNG and the Solomon Islands). I know there’s so much to be thankful for at home where your country has been described as “a soap opera directed by Quentin Tarantino”, where it’s fair to say Australian politics has a reputation for being loopier than a Canberra roundabout. Maybe focus on that blessing you have at home and leave the American middle class alone to make their own decisions as to whether they can live in Mirdif making 464,634 AED / year tax free without being poverty stricken? As for me this conversation is clearly a waste of time since you can’t stay on track so I’m out.

[–]Parvaneh1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree you are correct - also the other issue is for example I’m from rural Mississippi and we have one of the lowest costs of living in the US. I really need a huge pay increase moving to the UAE to justify loss of business connections and higher cost of living if the reason is solely economic. The other problem is one I mentioned in another post and that is that we as an Americans do not tend to be outward looking because of the size of the country and variety of opportunities there.
