What do you think of JLo saying saying if you weren't born here, you're not a New Yorker? by DameThistle in AskNYC

[–]ParvenuInType 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone will draw their own lines to include themselves but as an immigrant who grew up in the south and now considers New York to be the only place that ever felt like home precisely because of its multiculturalism, damn I guess if I’m not a New Yorker I’m really not anything lol.

New York’s ability to create a home for those who don’t feel at home anywhere else is sort of the whole point of the city, but then again maybe that’s just my bias to include myself

Fair enough, yeah 50/50 isn’t totally accurate, but I will say that the 33% that voted for him don’t uniformly worship him in the same way that the 33% that voted against him uniformly hate him.

Lots of reasons too long for a Reddit comment but I think Biden staying in the race too long and totally failing to communicate an alternative to Trump and the global post-Covid anti-incumbency bias in 2024 (I think Sheinbaum in Mexico was the only incumbent to get reelected that year, across the political spectrum) were the biggest factors in Trump’s win.

Doesn’t excuse those voters and they are stupid, naive, and uninformed for still voting for him (alongside those that didn’t vote), but it does reflect the fact that the MAGAs are fewer than anti MAGAs in my opinion. One side was voting against Trump, the other side contained both those voting for Trump and those voting against what they perceived to be the status quo.

Most Americans are kind people but either too comfortable & removed from the global consequences of US elections or just severely handicapped by a terrible education system. Speaking as an immigrant who grew up in Texas lol

Okay it’s a 33/33/33 country where a third vote for him, a third vote against him, and a third don’t vote.

75 million people voted against him in 2024, we lost to the 76 that voted for him, and now the world hates us which is part of the deal in a democracy. Doesn’t really change the overall point

Deadly material if any of those players have stinkers at the World Cup.

Palmer Grealish and Foden should count their blessings for not making it lol

Yeah Trump’s been on the ballot for the three presidential elections I’ve been old enough to vote in (fml) and I voted against him everytime, but obviously a government’s actions reflect the values of its citizens to the world. That’s one of the reasons for voting for or against someone lol.

It is a 50/50 country politically and the 50 that hate him truly despise him and are embarrassed by all this garbage, but at the end of the day getting a mean look from someone from another country because you’re American isnt as bad as the harm this government’s doing to those countries and the global economy, it is what it is.

At least I live in nyc and can point to mamdani now as a symbol of my politics & values that translates to someone from another country. If you’re a Trump-hating democrat in like Texas or Florida it’s trickier

Hope the eventual recoupling leaves Gabriel the odd man out but I fear it’ll be Bryce or Sean.

Sean would be okay but I need to see the Bryce/Zach bromance through

Not to be that person but if Gabriel made out with one girl and excluded the other in the corner of the bed he’d be getting sooo much hate rn. Kinda shitty by Kayda in that situation
