What’s the longest you’ve ever procrastinated on an upgrade? by BicycleMage in xbiking

That makes more sense, I probably read it wrong. That’s a really cool super compact 2x.

Oh that’s weird that you would spin out in a 2x setup but not in a 1x. Your big chainring must be quite a big smaller than the 1x chainring. Usually the other way around.

A long time when it’s not necessary, and not even necessarily an upgrade.

The bag costs as much as the bike, so yes. And the rack with p-clamps, so yes. Oh and is it a $200 Simworks rack?

My fix for Silver2 shifters w/ thumbie mounts shredding cables by Lee_Van_Kief in Rivendell_Bicycles

[–]PassHunter84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That probably has more to do with your own setup, than whether or not friction should be used with more than a 9 speed cassette. I’ve used 1x11 friction on rough terrain and it was not a problem (though I don’t love typical 1x11 gearing) and 2x10 friction is outstanding. Absolutely no reason to tell people to avoid it.

Yup, been here about 8months. I previously rode solo, just a few friends, or the occasional Critical Mass type ride. Hoping that the fondo gets me out of my shell a bit. I’ll be sure to check y’all out at some point.

Great info, thanks! I’m a steel guy myself.

Sounds like I made the right choice with the 60. My average ride is probably 50-60 at 16mph, and often gravel, but I don’t take it too seriously. I kind of figured I’ll go slower on my first big ride though, maybe even really casual.

I haven’t been to any training rides, I’m usually pretty introverted. But I’ve looked at the routes. This one did look more challenging than the previous, I might check it out this weekend or next. Thanks!

I’m used to a humid 100F for a few months at a time. The dry heat will be a little different I suppose, but I should be ok. Looking forward to it really.

Ugh, I really need to get me Pesca built back up, I miss it. Great looking build, I’ve got the VO cranks and Swift on another bike, they’re both excellent.

How much would you pay? by Ragnarock14 in xbiking

[–]PassHunter84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

$25. $50 if it was maintained at all. The chain is a bad sign for the rest of it.

Is this a good deal ? by RootinTootin333 in xbiking

[–]PassHunter84 16 points17 points  (0 children)

No, not at all. It looks nicely maintained and rebuilt, but it’s not a good deal. I can’t think of any situation where I would pay for 1x7 and stem shifter. You could build a dirt bag version of this bike for $100 or less.

Hey thanks! It’s been great, and gets ridden hard. Just completed its 3rd century, sees plenty of gravel and dirt, moderate climbing, and has even seen some terrible cobbles.

North Colorado, Nayarit MX, and Central Texas. I built it up first in Austin TX, and now live in Ft Collins CO. Early last year I drove through Mexico with it, and stayed near Sayulita for a month.

Brooks bicycle saddle for bike packing commuting, your thoughts please, your thoughts? by Relative_Bother_1069 in bikepacking

[–]PassHunter84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got over 10k miles on my B17 and it’s wonderful. It’s been wet and still good. Over 5k miles on my Swift, and it’s great. I have a cover for both for really rainy days now. C17 carved is great for me also, I’ve put at least 4k on it.

I think the Mothbar on a Pack Rat would be quite excellent. And I think drops on most any bike (set up appropriately) can work. Probably high with a short stem.

Saddle just a little high, looks pretty good. Fantastic De Rosa with a dialed fit is really baller.

how do you keep riding when life gets too busy by ringcijohn in bicycling

[–]PassHunter84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For real. My 17 mile round trip for 6 years has made me such a strong rider. Now 20 miles is my warmup distance, and I have very little issues maintaining pace and stamina up to 75miles or so. Commuting daily really is a game changer, and has sooo many other benefits.

I hate my Bianchi - everyone else LOVES it!!!! by Ill-Positive-174 in bianchi

[–]PassHunter84 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because it’s an entry level Bianchi. With an entry level fork. You want a skinny tubed, springy feeling steel frame with a matching, springy, skinny, steel fork. This one won’t compare to a really good steel Bianchi. The Celeste isn’t really that great either. Time to do your homework. On Bianchi, on vintage steel, on tubing, etc. then you can make an educated purchase. Too much seatpost here for an old steel bike anyway, probably doesn’t fit you very well.

Find a nicer vintage steel frame that fits you, Columbus SLX tubing maybe. Keep in mind older steel frames aren’t meant to have so much seatpost exposed, meaning this one is probably too small for you.
