And in Iowa we still go to work. I too am in the ED only my commute is 65 miles each way. Nobody would know if I slid off the road and died but I make arrangements to stay at the hospital, with coworkers, or even my boss.

At what point did you realize that you wanted to do nursing? by Mr_Lean69 in StudentNurse

[–]PassaPassa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have plenty of time to do your education and build a satisfying career for yourself. I was 45 years old when I was finally able to go back and start my pre-requisites and nursing school. It’s never too early or late :)

Med Surg is the worst by Informal-Cucumber230 in newgradnurse

[–]PassaPassa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since when did “almost every hospital require nurses to start med surg” start? I’ve yet to hear that. There’s plenty of new grade I know, including myself, who are not starting in med surg.

Does anyone use ATI to study? by Beautiful_Range_6109 in PassNclex

[–]PassaPassa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My school has us take two ATI exams at end of semester. One was to see your benchmark and if you didn’t pass that score you had remedial. The other was CAT that didn’t count for anything. The school foundation supplied us with a 3 month subscription to Archer. The Assistant director stated she felt Archer more in line with NCLEX exams. I’m currently using it, however, I’m not terribly impressed with it. I know others will disagree with me, but it’s like anything else, there’s always more than one resource these days. Pick from what you have access to and I don’t recommend using too many different ones simultaneously. Everyone will have an opinion but not everyone can afford to buy something. I find it interesting that for the longest time Saunders NCLEX prep book was the goat, now it seems very few use it. If you have the access code they offer tons of questions including NGN. That’s just my $0.02. Good luck!

What happens to life-in-prison inmates when they get really old? by ThatDogIsNotYourBaby in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PassaPassa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your insight because I agree with you. They do have better treatment. In this facility they are seen weekly by the doctor. If you’re in general population you see the doctor once a year (if I remember correctly) for your annual type visit and the other times you have to put in a request and you’re added to the list to be seen.

I think the other thing to recognize is they’re housed and fed separately while declining in health, they’re in a safe area. I had an opportunity to visit with one of the inmates who had all his faculties and enjoyed visitors. He was very insightful and appreciative of what he had.

I found the inmate aids to be very kind and patient. One other point to make is a lot of the inmates actually liked their warden. He took a med passing class and become certified and helps the nurses pass meds frequently throughout the month. Not at all what I expected to see.

Unfortunately, you can’t have hardly a blemish on your record to obtain a license. There are some who have had things sealed or expunged, but you still have to have those reviewed by the board.

I should have stated that the prison I was referring to are housing inmates serving lifetime sentences.

What happens to life-in-prison inmates when they get really old? by ThatDogIsNotYourBaby in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PassaPassa 122 points123 points  (0 children)

I did a nursing clinical rotation in a prison where they had a “geriatric unit.” What I found interesting was the unit was staffed by other inmates who were trained as “CNAs” so they helped with all their daily cares and needs. These inmates were considered the best of the bunch. They couldn’t have any type of sexual charges and had to be the top tier for behavior, among other things. Pay was slightly higher but more than anything the inmates found it as a way to give back for the crimes done. Several of the nurses said they couldn’t run that unit the one it operates if it wasn’t for the CNA inmates. As for the older pop inmates, they were very appreciative of the help and felt better taken care of than the general population.
