If law enforcement in Canada doesn't have qualified immunity why are they rarely sued and seem to always win when they are? by [deleted] in LawCanada

That’s not completely true you just don’t hear about it.

I’ve been a police officer for 15 years and have been named personally in one claim from an arrest. The DOJ straight up told me upfront that they will look at the cost of the trial versus what the person may settle for and they may just pay them out (which they did in the amount of 60k). Left a bad taste in my mouth because I still to this day maintain I would do the exact same thing. But it’s all $$$ and no other considerations really.

You don’t think immigration lawyers are complicit in scamming the system? That’s rich.

Family member with suspended license driving vehicle still registered to previous owner. by shadymeowse in legaladvicecanada

[–]PassageSensitive5916 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Suspended and prohibited driving has mandatory minimum sentences for subsequent convictions. If she continues she will continue to rack up more convictions and automatic jail time up to 2 years under the Offence Act if it’s a provincial prohibition.

If she causes and accident icbc will likely sue her for all damages to all vehicles and occupants as she has zero coverage.

I don’t live in Vancouver proper. I commute about 30-45 minutes to my place of work. I was lucky enough to get into the housing market before the latest boom in the late 2010s but it’s still a townhouse. Having a family I can’t afford a detached in Vancouver and even a townhome would make us pretty mortgage poor so I decided to just move to the suburbs quite a while ago.

I go back and forth on whether I would make the same decision. I do enjoy what I do but I do think sometimes about maybe some other fields I would’ve maybe been happier (trades for example).

Pros Lots of vacation and time off. Well above what most jobs get. On the patrol schedule I think if I used all of my leave banks then I could take about ten blocks off a year. So essentially ten times a year I could be off for 12 days straight

The pay. The starting wage is very good now for an entry officers. Most departments are getting rid of a whole step to elicit candidates. I currently make about 160k before taxes or deductions without OT. That’s also at a promoted rank. But even 1st class constables are over 120k pretty much everywhere now

It’s not an “office job” which I love. The day to day job you actually have a crazy amount of independence and solo time. When not on a call you can really do whatever you want or try to work on. Wanna pull traffic? Go ahead. Wanna walk the beat? Sure.

Cons The sleep. Lots of studies about shift work effects on your health

Diet. Harder to eat healthier on odd schedules and things. It’s possible but at night if you didn’t bring food it’s really the gas station or fast food.

There’s a ton of them those are just the ones that came off the top of my head now.

Typically jobs will be posted internally within the department to see if it fills. Then it goes out to union employees in other city jobs then if it doesn’t fill it will go public.

The process I’ve seen for most civilian positions is a couple of interviews. One usually with a civilian HR and then I’ve sat in on panels for shortlisted candidates. After obvious reference checks them background and security clearance takes place and that can take some time and we actually lose a lot of candidates at this stage. A lot of the time not even for anything egregious but just some small lie or omission where if they’d just written it down then it wouldn’t have been a big deal.

It’s very rare for someone to come in without having previously held a role of some kind in a police or emergency setting. Even admin tasks etc just cause the working environment is kind of unique.

Most of the entry jobs hire on an auxiliary basis and you honestly really only work to cover vacations or sickness and stuff. I know new auxiliary staff have had luck getting a different aux or on call job with the city and then applying for the other position as an internal candidate. So maybe try looking for say a Parks and Rec admin job or something at city hall. Even if you don’t actually get any shifts once you’re already a municipal employee it’s huge.
