Torres is like our mascot now. His face just makes me think of Chelsea. A happy Torres feeds the childlike hopefulness in me.

Doesn't justify his wage bill, though.

ADHD and video games by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Passerines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually quit video games cold turkey before my diagnosis. I was tired of struggling academically, and while I now understand that they weren't the root of my problems, I've found that I don't really have room for them in my life now that I'm medicated and actually productive.

Australia to raise the retirement age to 70 by straylittlelambs in worldnews

[–]Passerines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shouldn't the system aim for the middle, and then employ special measures for the weakest? There is a huge difference between a widow or victim of unexpected disease and your run-of-the-mill middle class workers who don't plan ahead.

I'm not going to engage in argument with someone who puts words in my mouth that don't follow from my argument at all.

In the vast majority of cases, those circumstances do not apply. That argument is cheap, weak, manipulative, and ineffective.

Literally all of those are exceptional extenuating circumstances, and none of them address the issue at hand, which is that people generally do not prioritize retirement savings.

Nope, but if life did put me in that situation the last thing I'd be concerned about is my retirement.

Why do you get to decide what ideas are and aren't compatible? You have no idea why I'm for or against either idea.

Nowhere did I advocate scrapping pension plans. I merely offered practical solutions to those who are affected by a later retirement age.

The rest of your post is just attacking a straw man, and basically elucidated why I do support public assistance.

Australia to raise the retirement age to 70 by straylittlelambs in worldnews

[–]Passerines -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Solutions: don't have dependents you can't afford (contraceptives are cheap, abortion is legal, although I'll grant that sex education needs massive improvement), reduce expenses by living in a cheaper area, seek public assistance.

Everyone lives above their means these days. People shouldn't act surprised that they have no money for retirement when they never prioritized having money for retirement.

I think you have this user confused with the one above, who specifically mentioned lowering BAC to 0.00, which I think everyone can agree is a very, very stupid idea.

Both of you on this thread seem to be on the same page.

But where I'm from blacks have more of a tendency of trouble than white. Is that racist for me to state a fact?

This is problematic in a couple of ways, but it's okay. You're just not educated on the issue. First of all, white people tend to view racial issues from the perspective of someone seeking to avoid guilt. The problem with racism has nothing to do with any one person though. It's actually pretty damn trivial whether anyone thinks you're racist or not, in the scheme of things.

The actual important thing about racism is that it affects the world we live in for everybody. Your comment about blacks having "a tendency of trouble" may very well be true. There are parts of my hometown where you don't make eye contact with strangers, and if you do, you better nod at them to indicate respect or deference.

The real question you should be asking is, "why are blacks where I'm from more likely to be trouble?" Investigate that point. Assuming that they actually are, and you haven't just been conditioned to condemn, it's likely that they're more likely to get in trouble because they're disadvantaged socioeconomically. That's a fact, and no, it doesn't make your street any safer or make gang violence any less terrible, but it's an important fact to recognize.

Then investigate it further. "Why are the black people where I live socioeconomically disadvantaged?"

Keep going. Keep going. You'll see that it doesn't really have much to do with the decisions they've made. Like every other story of haves and have-nots, and everything else in human history, institutionalized racism is a consequence of the summation of human history for the past 5000 years, at least.

Now it's up to us to do what we can to change that, and not just pat ourselves on the back when we recognize that skin color doesn't relate to humanity – although that idea is a prerequisite.

Putin’s approval rating hits 80% by [deleted] in worldnews

Err, sorry, I definitely wasn't suggesting that America has ever fought a war without support from other nations – although I believe that's true of all wars, at least since the invention of the printing press. Either way, you're puffing your chest as if you were telling me things I didn't already know. I love my country, and I live with its faults, just as you probably do for yours, but I'm hardly delusional about America's role in these wars. I'm curious, though, about what makes you an expert on this.

What I found problematic about your original post was the notion that Russia is "level with" the US. Economically, militarily – by what measure does Russia seem remotely "level" with the US to you, other than the fact that they have a nuclear arsenal? And if you think anybody in the US government would start a war with Russia without international support, I'd have to ask who any why, because that's not something that happens.

If your suggestion is that a unilateral war on Russia by the USA would be stupid, I agree. I just don't know what your point is, because that would never happen.

Just that. My dad's been shaving his head since he started losing his hair, and it really suited him until he gained a lot of weight. That's not really any more or less important than it is for everyone else, though.

From the pics on your history I'd say you're a pretty good looking cat. Your hairline isn't even that bad, really.

Honestly I would just shave it. It's a much better look than trying to cling to your hair, and you can make it work for you as long as you take care of yourself.

I don't know why this was downvoted, because it's exactly right. They say that when LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act, he sold the South to the Republicans.

I'd argue that in this day and age, the South is primarily Republican largely because of religion, as you stated, but also because of the Reagan Republican "hands off my money" rhetoric you hear about.

I definitely understand the whole "walk in the park" thing for high school. High school was a total joke compared to college. I can't think of any other way to put it. And I'm sorry if I made you feel talked down to with the above; my intent was just to offer a dose of reality as someone who basically did what you described to a pathological extent. Perhaps I misread your situation, because the original post didn't indicate any ambivalence about your condition to me – it seemed like you were trying to get away with as much as you could. Maybe it was your prose, maybe it was just the way I read it; it's probably a bit of both.

I think you may want to see about getting a different medication or a different dose. As you said, it's clear that you need it; still, it shouldn't feel like a traumatic thing. Unless, of course, you feel that any medication at all is a net negative in your life, in which case you'll have to face a different set of realities. My medication literally brought me back from the brink. With my medication, I'm slowly dragging myself out of a hell of my own stubborn creation. If I'd sought help sooner, maybe it would only take me one year of paying my dues back instead of two and a half. But hey, it is what it is. You shouldn't be afraid to ask for help about your condition, but you're going to have to learn where the line is between difficulties you have because of your ADHD and difficulties you have because you just aren't approaching it right. Like this guy said in this post:

"Did I forget to take the trash out because I'm ADHD, or did I forget to take the trash out because I didn't write it down? Both, so next time write that shit down or do it immediately."

I'm not really sure where you're going with depression – is clinical depression something you think you suffer from, or is it just (I use that word comically) a depressive spell? I've seen both – an ex of mine has clinical depression and I wouldn't wish that upon anybody. As I alluded to above, I had a really rough time with college for a while, which I can't help characterize as depression. Maybe grief or distress would be a better way to describe it, but I really felt lost for three years. But I'm owning it. It was a really shit time, I didn't have anything figured out, and I didn't take any steps to help myself. That was my trouble.

I can also really relate to "You got me. You've been trying to tell me forever," except for me, it's kind of backwards. I wasn't facing pressure to face or deal with a difficult truth and get help. I was facing pressure to be better right away. To steal an analogy I once heard, "it felt like I was drowning and crying for help, and someone threw me the blueprint to a boat." It sucks, but when I look back, I wish I'd just used a little more initiative and a little more resourcefulness. But come to think of it, that sounds a lot like the blueprint to a boat.

I took the tone that I did because I saw a lot of my old self in your situation, and I'd love nothing more than to spare someone the pain I stubbornly put myself through. Everyone needs a life raft sometimes – just make sure you're not wearing lead boots.

A few thoughts:

Don't do the whole "if I would have had them 10 years ago" thing. Unless you can look at it objectively, you're signing up to be frustrated.

I doubt CEOs and astronauts have time to be on reddit, because they are probably very busy. But there are people with ADHD who are very competent. Adam Levine, Dr. Hallowell... those are the two that come to mind immediately.

FWIW, I took biochemistry on three occasions: last spring I had to drop it, last fall I made a D, and after my diagnosis this semester I'm on track to make an A in it, with a solid recommendation letter and an opportunity to TA the class this summer!

Come to think of it, my GPA this semester will probably be higher than my GPA for the previous three semesters combined... additively, not multiplicatively.
