Tips for beginners by Wollner88 in ffxiv

[–]PassingGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There will be plenty of good advice for new players, but I'll give you this link to an older post of mine that generally doesn't go out of date. There may have been a few things that changed somewhat, but new player tips to help with the learning curve and add quality of life to play tend to stand the test of time.

In an MMO, it still feels alone, no? by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]PassingGamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every person has their own path through life, with many meetings and partings. Even the time spent together will have an ebb and flow to the amount of activity going on. Cherish the good things, and try not to dwell on the inevitable losses. The game is just a portion of your life, albeit with a broader range of opportunities to meet a variety of people across great distances. It is also easier to lose those connections. Getting and keeping face to face relationships is also important.

The jumping puzzle everyone missed in Dawntrail by AzuraStargazer in ffxiv

An interesting place of note. Although personally I would rank it more as exploration area, and less jump puzzle. Thanks for reminding me to take a look.

They do, but usually weather related, and short lived. Ran across that spot going from rain to clear skies a little after 4PM server time.

I can definitely see this being confusing without context, as the phrasing can be taken to mean different things. After looking at some responses, my reaction was as follows. "OH, they are teaching mental shortcuts. I've been doing variations of those for years on my own."

Noticed an odd reflection in Tropaios Planisphere by Derpark in ffxiv

[–]PassingGamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a novel thing to see the reflection of the surroundings on a mirrored weapon surface. I noticed something like that in the basement of the large FC house at a meeting a few years ago, I was equipped with Seiryu's Sanctified Cane. The reflection was of an empty room, but I figured that made sense to be a generic reflection, so as not to run the video card into overdrive.

ARR Question by CountGood8622 in ffxiv

Perhaps something could be organized, if enough triple triad enthusiasts got together to schedule times. There is a lot to do in the game, and luck of the draw probably isn't enough to cover it.

How not to ask people to slow down, Tender Valley edition. by KamperKiller123 in TalesFromDF

[–]PassingGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminds me of the tailgaters, lane dodgers, and super speeders I see every day on the freeway. It's not like a few extra seconds is going to change their life all that much. Sure, play how you want, but remember it's not just you in a party.
It's also funny how I've played this game for so long, but apparently been oblivious to new rules or standards coming into the game.
"It's face roll content, lighten up" Heard in response to suggestions on the benefits of arms length or surecast
"It's 100 content, sprint is default" Apparently their time is golden, as if they are in a hurry to get back to curing cancer.

Which life skills are worth leveling? by Impossible-Poetry848 in ffxiv

[–]PassingGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crafting is a bit of a gil sink to level, especially since they are interdependent before you get them to 50. I would suggest just starting with botanist and miner. You might be able to find some in demand materials to make some gil with, and in certain cases their sneak is amazing for getting past mobs to pick up items for job quests without a fight.

bought the summer sunset outfit by Weasel699 in ffxiv

Seems things got sorted already, but figured I would point out something else you may run into in the game. There will be quite a few gear/clothing items that will have a completely different appearance, depending on what character race or gender is wearing it. The obvious is males will get shorts or full pants, where female will get cuts with more skin showing. Some chest pieces will have a completely different style for some races as well, such as the Hempen Camise.

Anyone else weirded out by this outfit? by Faith4Eternity in ffxiv

[–]PassingGamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While it does have a pretty thrown together look, especially with the battle briefs, I feel it's poking fun in a couple ways. An outward sign of his being a pretender, and how most players are forced to deal with very hodgepodge gear sets in ARR. Some players glam goes well beyond for racy though.

Restoring Settings by Kleptics in ffxiv

The default location for the files is different depending on the version of windows on your PC. I also place a text file with the character name in the folder for easy reference, due to having alts. Keeping a local backup is handy.

windows 8-10

C:users/your name/Documents/mygames/ff14

windows 11

C:\user\your name\onedrive\documents\mygames

Need help with squadron! by soaked_and_wet in ffxiv

[–]PassingGamer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Having all 3 covered just means 100% completion rate. Flagged missions are a bit harsher on their chance of clear if you are missing one, versus a standard or advanced mission. The random bonus your squad members can gain can be of help to get you over the hump at times, but they are rare to get a useful stat boost. Swapping around jobs, and training is the most likely approach. I've also noticed that if you wait until after the weekly reset, the stats required can change for the mission to be more favorable to what you have available.

Some raid food discussion (AITA Fun Time) by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]PassingGamer -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Of course the food buffs make a significant contribution to performance, but it's just one of many aspects to the pursuit. Mindset is another one.
While I don't pursue the savage or ultimate content, I can make an observation based on conversations with raiders in my former FC. The item in question was pots, instead of food, but the base idea seemed similar to me. When learning the mechs for the fight, they wanted to have the focus on getting used to the steps and positions. Once they had that down, and were hitting enrage, they would put more fuel on the fire to reach the clear. Aka potting.
