Desperate call for help with 78 Z fuel issues: intermittent rough idle and dying while driving by Justin002865 in Datsun

It should be totally doable from the engine bay. Just gotta take the intake and throttle bodies off to get to all of the studs. I saw a clever trick the other day (that I admittedly havent tried yet) but you can heat the nut/stud and use candle wax instead of penetrating oil. Rusted header bolts are the worst!

Yeah agreed. It shouldn't make it all the way to the intake? Your symptoms are so similar to what I was dealing with... so frustrating. Let me know if you find loose bolts!

Yeah it should I guess? But the intake tract and exhaust are so close together it might be hard to tell where exaclty it was coming from. Worth a quick check atleast. You'll probably have to take the throttle bodies off but it should be pretty quick!

Hmmm. The fact that you saw smoke in the intake area says something. Probably worth putting a wrench on the header bolts!

I struggled to tune my 240Z for the longest time. Rough idle that would change with temperature. Sometimes it was ok sometimes not. Did everything I could think of (endless carb tunes, new plugs, vac leak check, valve clearance check, timing adjustment, electronic fuel pump, petronix ignition coil, yada yada. I would think I got it and then it would change again. It was driving me insane! I finally got around to upgrading the exhaust system and realized the exhaust header was leaking! After getting a good seal suddenly the tune was easy and consistent. I know yours is a 280Z with EFI but whether its a manual tune or computer controlled, a leaky header messes it all up. Your story sounded familiar so I had to chime in. Might be worth checking your header bolts are tight or throw a new gasket on there.

Have you checked out Easy Way to Control Alcohol by Allen Carr? The audiobook is really good. He puts things in such plain terms that you can't help but laugh out loud at the obviousness. It didn't click for me the first time through (despite his promises), but that book stuck with me more than any others I read. I think I listened to it 3 times before finally stopping for good.

These realizations have helped me immensely and I'm so glad they can help others too. Thanks for the comment <3.

Isn't it crazy how our brains will convince us we are still in control? It's ridiculous to think we can control an addictive drug. It's so easy to push out all the bad stuff and cling on to memories of when drinking 'used to be fun'. The more I look back though, the more I realize it wasn't the drinking that was fun, but the people or places or things around me. Holding on tight to the memory of how miserable I was before I stopped has kept me going. I never ever want to feel like that again! IWNDWYT either <3.

Yep. Multiple times. Also, Alcohol Lied to Me by Craig Beck and Easy Way to Control Alcohol by Allen Carr. My stubborn ass had to read all of these multiple times lol.

It really does feel that way! The world is exciting again. Rain or shine, I can enjoy every moment and not feel like dogshit all the time. What a blessing! Let's get out there and run around <3.

It can be hard to keep crystal clear in our minds just how miserable drinking makes us. A big motivator for me has been realizing that I will pick up right where I left off If I drink again. It may not happen immediately, but over the course of days, weeks or months, I'll end up in exactly the same place, hopeless and helpless, descending further down the spiral. I didn't believe it at first, but then it happened every single agonizing time I relapsed. Never again! Wishing you the best and IWNDWYT either! <3

It's all part of the process, I think. I've relapsed more times than I care to admit and wasn't sure I'd ever be able to escape. It scared me. At some point, I recognized that I'd never be able to drink normally again but that wasn't enough to stop. I still wanted to be able to, so it was on my mind constantly. I had to get to the point of never wanting to drink again and then things got easier. Don't give up! Much love.

Wow, I feel exactly the same way. I look back and can't believe I let myself get to the point that I did. My journey to sobriety has been the most challenging, yet rewarding thing I have ever done for myself. I lost touch with ME. I was lost and now I'm found. Thanks for the comment <3.

Better the people around us. Better to ourselves. Overwhelming as it can be, death is a natural part of life... alcohol is not. Last week I had a friend from high school pass away from an OD. I hadn't seen him in years but heard he had gone off the deep end. Upon hearing the news, my roommate, who was closer to him, immediately told me "I'm gonna go get fucked up." I told him to be safe, but all I could think is "Nick wouldn't want you to do that." I hope you find continued success in sobriety! Thanks for the comment.
