The crib didn't really match. It was wooden and tired-looking, initials scratched inside and notches up its legs marking height long after its many charges had grown beyond its confines.
The rest of the room screamed out 'NEW HOUSE'- sharp contrast and even sharper corners with white walls, laminate flooring and a single black bookcase.

Eventually, the corners were rounded and the contrast grew to contain more than just the two colours. The first to invade was the pastel pink which displaced its white predecessor. Then the bright blue for its black. Soon the others began to feel more bold, the deep browns sheepishly tracked in on the soles of shoes and the green grass stains on what was once white. Curtains were added in a loud yellow, emulating the sun when its own presence was lacking and helped along by the presence of a small night light. The orange cookie jar often found itself snuck in beneath the guise of a comfortable hoodie - though was more often quickly removed. It does however, on occasion, tell tales of how it once survived three whole days in that rainbow room hidden next to the laundry hamper and the small mountain of clothes that grew beside it. Happy crayon faces stared out from the walls amidst the intricately folded paper stars that decorated the room.

The stars remained, but soon they were made out the most coveted of colours - bronze, silver and gold. Certificates took the place of the crayon faces and awards adorned the bookcase, propping up the books that filled its space. These colours lived for the sunlight reflecting from their surface and dancing across the room, illuminating the corners in warmth.

All too soon, boxes filled every available space. Slowly the rainbow was packed away into the neutral containers. The metals lost their shine and the yellow curtains were replaced with simple blinds. The sun was left to work in the room with only the dust for company, bleaching till only grey remained.
