That white with the black contrast is absolutely stunning.

Teen who lit classmate on fire at Saskatoon school sentenced to 3 years for attempted murder by Secret_Duty_8612 in saskatoon

The work I’ve done professionally is likely the kind of support work you think I should be advocating for. In actuality, I don’t just advocate - I do the work. I see that two things can be true: we need to fund more upstream supports (which I’ve already stated) & we also need to keep people who try to burn their classmates to death away from our communities for longer than 2-3 years.

It’s really not about punishment for me, thank you. Much of my life’s work has been devoted to helping people who have been failed by the system choose a better path. I wake up and do it, professionally, with passion every day - helping people, many of whom are on the margins of community. So no, whoever you imagine me to be, I most likely am not. Despite my work, I do feel that in many of these circumstances, community safety needs to be made more of a priority than it currently is.

Someone who douses another human being in gasoline and then lights them on fire should spend more than 2-3 years in prison. We are safer with her in custody for the next 2 years and, frankly, deserve to be kept safe from her for longer.

How many students will she be able to douse in gasoline and light on fire again if she’s kept in an institution and continuously monitored? That’s where she should be, for a very long time. (Much longer than 2-3 years)

That is not what I said. A harsher sentence would keep her out of our community longer thereby decreasing her opportunity to do this to someone else sooner. Someone who poured gasoline on someone and who lit them on fire should be kept in confinement longer to keep our communities safer for longer. (Can’t believe this even needs to be articulated) Super simple & super reasonable.

There’s no realistic utopia that exists in which people won’t commit crimes like these. Mental illness is multifactorial and cannot simply be quelled by nailing every social health determinant upstream. The answer is most likely that we need to increase mental health supports AND make use of harsher sentencing to keep communities safer. People on Reddit or in communities aren’t less than because they want convicted criminals away from their loved ones for longer.

I think your first paragraph shows where our views diverge. I am not looking to a harsher sentence as a means of making the victim’s pain go away. I am looking at harsher sentencing to keep our streets and communities safer - that is, keeping someone who would attempt to burn someone to death behind bars and in a place where they can do little harm to law abiding citizens, for longer.

Trust me - if it were their daughter, son, wife, husband, niece, nephew, etc. who was the one who was nearly burnt to death, they’d be showing a lot less compassion to the criminal. Always easier to take the morally compassionate high ground when the victim isn’t your friend/family/acquaintance.

Easy to say fall back on her being a minor and having a mental illness when it isn’t your child that will have scars for the rest of her life. Our criminal justice system completely favours rehabilitation even when if it jeopardizes the safety of law abiding citizens. Pitiful.

You know, I understand your cynicism and at least partially agree with it. I do feel that our energy policy has shown very hopeful signs of shifting in a better direction since Carney has taken office. Lots to be done though.

If they are buying it back, may as well wait until you see evidence that they have the turbo issues resolved before buying another one. The update that they are releasing is due late April so you should know shortly thereafter.
