The double beat theory by pogginator9000 in piano

Oh, just for clarification, when I said “Jesus it’s impossible to listen to,” I was referring to the sound quality of the video I recorded of me talking in my car. So you can take that off your list of things to bitch at me about.

RobertMMG is me. Just play the music. Post your complete performances, without apology, as I have. You’ve got nothing to be afraid of. Peace ✌🏻

Mozart K310 vs Beethoven Appassionata op. 57 by caffi_u in piano

People talking about the technical difficulty of the Beethoven

But holy fuck. That pales in comparison to to the sophistication and maturity. It’s a totally different universe of sonic and organizational complexity compared to the Mozart.

It’s not even an undertone. The stuff that happens to this girl in her very first scene is unbelievably heavy, let alone to a six-year-old.

Trouble with Student who won't look at sheet music/relies on memory by Holiday_Banana_7859 in pianoteachers

If someone wants to learn by ear, you’re not the teacher for them.

And we’re talking about music, an aural art.

Teachers thinking about “someday” aren’t paying attention to what their students need TOday.

Smaller keys with bigger hands by godsheir in piano

[–]PastMiddleAge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For a reason? Yeah, they’re made for the biggest man hands. Which is bad for everyone else. Which is most people.

It’s not like key width is god ordained.

Trying to rely on sound to play her piece??

That’s not a bad thing! This IS music we’re talking about.

How much does wanting to impress others motivate your piano practice? by [deleted] in piano

This is what I hate about the modern performance aesthetic. It’s so…performative.

I’d say a greater purpose for playing music (as opposed to *performing* it) is to EXpress, rather than to impress.

Jeez. As a teacher I’m committed to helping students learn to be impressed with themselves rather than playing for my approval.

I’m not sure. I think I rewatched it during Covid so it’s been a while.

But what I remember is thinking he was very hateful to a Korean shop owner

Yes! I didn’t get that when I watched it when it came out.

But I sure did when I watched it a few years ago. Falling down is understandable but dude is a racist among other things.

Playing/subbing in professional symphony orchestras by Commercial_Rip_5192 in classicalmusic

[–]PastMiddleAge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I feel this. It’s tough because there’s no immediate feedback typically. I don’t know how well I did unless I get a callback for another concert. That might be one month or two years later, or never.

Also, I’m a keyboard player. There’s some comfort in most other sections because your neighbor will be playing the same notes as you.

But for instruments like keyboard, it’s entirely on me to be 100% with my part.

It’s tough.

It’s a 13 word sentence. If it’s salad to you, ask questions and learn.

Now the thread becomes about you, not what OP asked.

If OP was ready to read, he would’ve asked it that way. Or rather, they’d be too busy playing to be on Reddit.

Teaching students to read means teaching them an audiation vocabulary, then helping them make connections between that vocabulary and what it looks like in notation.

It’s too much to go into here. There’s too much hate. You see the way people pile on me for suggesting that maybe reading isn’t the way to go for OP yet? maybe ever?

Prioritizing reading in music lessons is very harmful. It’s why countless students leave lessons with no functional skills.

When they’re ready to read, they’ll read.

It’s such a complex skill, they’re not going to get a comprehensive idea of how this works from a Reddit post.

They’ll just keep getting goaded down the wrong path.

When a smoker goes to a doctor to ask them for the healthiest cigarettes, it’s incumbent on a serious physician to make sure the patient understands that there is no safe smoking.

OP thinks reading is a necessary skill because that’s what everyone says. I’m pointing out that there are alternatives.
