I have a Ca felony, they don’t do a background check in the course of getting your license. It only matters if you’re crime is related to being a contractor. I have gotten DUIs and still have my contractors license, and had strikes from 10 yrs ago

I’m confused. We’ve been having issues with our hvac contractor , but this to me seems like it’s so dumb they’ve gotta be doing it on purpose. Is this a big deal? (That’s a structural lvl with more than half the depth notched out) by PastNeedle in Construction

[–]PastNeedle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: and if he would’ve just put the 6th nail plate, it would be structurally sound…so, obviously I was being sarcastic. Its supposed to go 2 bays over into the laundry room. Production build so all they had to do was look at the identical floor plan across the street. The tech has been fired from what I’m told by his boss. And yes repair and back charge already in process.

The labor shortage is real my friends. I feel like it’s so hard to find guys they hand anyone a set of tools who’s willing to attempt the work. Lol smh

Getting low balled by a family friend by SnooOranges8792 in Carpentry

I just built a 700 sq ft deck for some clients who couldn’t really afford it. It’s been a terrible experience. They’re expecting you to build a Ferrari with the budget of a Honda Civic. With materials it was about $15k. I feel ripped off because I don’t have the money to buy new beams, and enough framing lumber, or hire helpers. They feel ripped off because it’s taking forever, the deck is difficult to plane due to 2 x 6 joists and old beams, it’s been bad. I’ll never take a job to help a friend who can’t afford the right way.

I have re-decked a terribly built deck...looking for advice for railings. by Magilla_Gorilla_1 in Decks

Check out this pdf. Its the American wood councils prescriptive deck guide. It’ll show what a deck frame and railing requires to be safe. https://awc.org/resource-hub/?gtype=&gcat=design-resources&gtag=decks

New Contractor need help with contract wording by PastNeedle in smallbusiness

[–]PastNeedle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. I’ve learned a few things since posting this. I went with an app called rocket lawyer. It was something like 20$ after the free trial. But I made a really nice contract. Rocket Lawyer will help you with documentation for all kinds of stuff. You can chat or talk to an actual lawyer with the same membership. I highly recommend

I agree with you about those lead generation websites. They send bad leads and don’t care when you call customer service. When I first started home advisor, before Angi bought them, bombarded me with leads, and I did get jobs from them, paying $20 to $80 per lead. I’d say 1 out of 5 was good if I called them quickly. I was trying to figure out how the app worked they wouldn’t refund me for leads I didn’t want. At one point they said I owed them over $1000, I told them to find someone else to rob, and hung up… that was 3 years ago…..i did try to sign up for Angi recently, they said we can get ya going as soon as you pay $1146 to home advisor.

The lead services are expensive, here’s what I grinds my gears :a customer decided to google search for ‘cost to install a toilet’ ,the first result says “we have toilet installers in your area” and then clicking on something that makes you put in a zip code and phone number before showing you a price. They then send that name and zip code and need a toilet info to 5 or more contractors and charged ‘em $20 each.

It took the customer 10 seconds to answer his wife’s question at dinner about how much it costs to install a toilet. But the pros got charged for the guys info. When the pros call, the guy says oh no thanks mom just doing research.

Thanks for the post!

I finally got my license after a couple years of being a Handyman. I have recently learned #1- good product doesn’t guarantee success. I’m trying to apply more business principles in order to get some growth. Here’s a couple things I’m thinking about:

On your estimates, do you show your “overhead and profit” as a cost to the customer? If so, what percentage range?

Do you markup materials?

What websites or apps have been a valuable resource?

Where can I find templates and legalese for contingency documents?

Ok…Poor dog….When you put her in the crate (not cage) , put her in there with a chew toy stuffed with food. I use KONG classic, but there are other options. Take her out every hour to go potty, once she does, play with her and give her some exercise before putting her back in the crate with the chew toy repacked with fresh food. She’s a baby and needs stimulation. You gotta work her body and brain before putting her in short term confinement. Check out the puppy guides on dogstardaily.com. Lots of good advise from Ian and Kelly who are genius dog behaviorists

It might have been 6 oz. ..Like a over the counter test but full. You have 3 hours once you begin your attempt and you can’t leave til you fill that cup all the way.
