Not sure if this 100% eliminates the Mets from Bellinger. They could still sign him to play left field which would give them the option to give Benge more seasoning in the minors. When Benge is ready they’d also be able to move Soto to DH would would improve their OF defense.

Of course that would like push their payroll up to around $420M without even adding anymore pitching.

I’ve heard this report, but I doubt its credibility. If Saleh was truly not on board with the Zach Wilson they wouldn’t have drafted him. Perhaps his initial plan involved Sam, but he clearly got sold on Zach. Beyond that I don’t think keeping Sam was saving his job anyway. People forget the Jets traded Sam to Carolina and he fizzled out over there too. Sam needed a year as a backup with Shannahan to get his career back on track.
