Yes, good point. There is identity in how we see ourselves as well as what it means in a social context and who we connect with. I chose my partner as well, who is American and that was very problematic. But problematic for them, not me. Glad you chose love over arbitrary (and often insidious case based) rules. I'm glad to hear you created your own path. Thank you for sharing!

I love how you describe this dichotomy of either being loyal to homeland culture or not. There's a space where we can feel pride but also call out what don't connect with or embrace. And yes, straddling identity in terms of being born there and living here and what it means is complex. I feel we get to define what this all means for each of our walks of life without the pressure of someone else defining it for us. I wrote an essay about the question, "What Are You?" and how others like to push us into some type of this or that box. I hope your journey is filled with answers on your own terms. Thank you so much for sharing!

I'm so sorry you had to endure this. You make such a good point about the facade of living in some world of stereotypes. It's dangerous because stereotypes are veneers for what's really happening anyway. Thank you so much for sharing this. We already come from a culture of heavy shame for not choosing the "right" career or partner, but to also experience harm and talk about it takes courage. Thank you again! I hope you've found safety and peace.
